Default car got hot and had a random no forward or reverse

Ok been battling an overheating problem and car was getting hot after i raced somebody on the street,, came to a stop and felt like i was taking off in second afterwards.. then wouldnt shift at all out of 2nd. pulled over cooled off and started shifting normally for maybe a minute then lost all gears again. pulled over and let it cool off again and same thing.finally just got a tow home. Planning to tear it apart for the upteenth time , but what does this sound like? Fluid is burnt and slightly red brown. I had to adjust the pin legnth on the servo a while back also.
It is a 94 4l60e

Oh its a 4l60e with everything but hardened shafts and a wide band.
I just dont get what is going on it to cause it to lose all drive but only after driving a little bit . then come back again.. Almost wonder if there is either a pump problem or a blockage somewhere. And the tranny is full of fluid with a deep pan to boot.

well could be limp mode but i imagine you have rulled that out ?
othet than that the filter could be clogged due to some failure , with the overheating likley converter related though its hard to say really till you take it apart

Well i haqvent ruled out limp mode totally but i believe in limp mode it would take off in 2nd and have no lockup correct?
Out of curiosity how does heat affect the converter? I can see the fluid thinning out from heat but does heat do anything to the hard parts besides the lock up clutch?

actually the converter is the source of heat and a failing converter or lockup clutch will cause alotta heat and in limp mode it would start in 3rd gear and you could manually only get 2-3 and no lockup

Gotcha...well yesterday i took it for a spin and shifted and ran perfect even at wot.. pulled into the driveway.. didnt shut it off..then pulled out and made it out into the street in reverse and then lost everything again..Put it in 1st and wouldnt move unless i reved it up real high and would suddenly catch..after that catch..it was in gear like normal?!?
Just throwing this out there but i noticed my seperator plate on the vb was pretty beatup from the check *****..Could this be related to a ball getting hung up in it or maybe even passed thru?

did you find out what the problem was? my car just started having similiar symptons, was driving and then teh rpms started boucning between 900 - 2500ish rpms, would do it at slight throttle or WOT - made no difference... then i lost all gears - D, 1,2,3 and reverse... shut off car, turned it on, ran normal had gear... as soon as i got to cruising rpm it lets out... lose all gears. if i turn it off and on, works... if i stay on the throttle - over 2500 rpm it will stay in gear, as soon as the rpms drop down, lose gears again. at a total loss not even sure where to start

Well i dropped the pan and the fluid looks absolutely awefull. Lots of metallic and clutch material. nice layer on the bottom of the pan . Didnt see any noticable damage on any of the checkball holes besides the prior wear(cupping on the vb plate holes). I am thinking about just cleaning what i can and get a new filter and fluid in it and go from there. After that i will put a pressure guage on it , and maybe put it on some jack stands and run it through the gears and duplicate the problem.
Will keep updated

Sounds like you need a new transmission or at least rebuilt. Changing the fluid and filter might put a bandage on it for awile. I am sure you will have more problems later. Something has come apart or is going to come apart.

Good luck.
