Default 3rd and 4th Rev freely unless manually shift.

I got a really weird issue. The car has a cam, SS 4000, and bolt-ons.

I got no codes.

I put it in D or OD and it'll shift from 1-2 fine. Then spins freely when it's supposed to go into 3rd, feels like major slippage, free reving, neutral (you get the picture). I'll give it a lot of gas and it'll shift back down into 2nd and then it'll move. Put it back in D and it'll do the same thing.

If I stop the car right after it does that, put it in 1st and manually shift to 2nd, then D, it'll shift fine. So weird.

So i hit another stop light, start it out normally in D and it did it again. So i stop the car right there, (has to be complete stop) try OD and then it shifts normally. WEIRD.

Any ideas?

My mechanic rebuilt the transmission and he said the valve body has seen extreme heat in the past, but it's worked fine for a year. Is it time for a new valve body or anyone have an idea why it behaves this way. It happens every now and then, 50/50.

I'm having the same problem, please post up your findings. I figured it was burned clutches since the ATF is alot darker than it was a few weeks ago.

sounds like a tuning issue with the 4000 stall

The trans was rebuilt a year ago and hardly ever driven. I just got the tune done cuz i installed a cam.

Just lost 3rd and 4th completely today.

Couldn't come at a worse time. I'm so ****** bummed.

Runs fine at WOT, just won't shift to 3rd or 4th under regular throttle.

so it will shift into 3rd and 4th at WOT but not at part throttle? if so you need to have the tuning rechecked

Ok, thanks Frank.

I been trying to get in touch with him. Maybe after the holiday it'll be easier.

You think this is a line pressure issue?

I'm going to go out on a limb here. If you drive your car and manually shift it the transmission works fine. Then sometimes it will seem to neutral in 3rd gear if the shifter is in the D3 or OD position. However at wot it is fine. That's a weird one. I guess the valve body could be to blame or an internal issue. I personally can not see where tuning is the issue. How is a bad tune going to cause a neutral condition? I would look at what the computer is commanding as far as shifts before I would dig into the computer. It might not be a bad idea to drop the transmission pan to check for debris. If it is full of crap stop right there and get the unit opened up to see what is going on. Getting in touch with your builder might be a good idea as well. Vince

I'm gonna take it to the same guy and have him check the line pressure.

2-3 solenoid could be culprit too or even 3-4 clutches.

This is what I've found in a search.

Also the valve body wasn't in the best of shape, the mechanic told me that and we never replaced it, just cleaned it up. The valve body could be the culprit.

If I buy a new one, would you guys recommend a stock rebuild or this ac delco one on ebay? What do you recommend?

Should I get it from you or would it be cheaper or better to order from them...could you PM me a link if so?

If not, I'll get in contact with you after I talk with my tuner. More than likely I am gonna need a new valve body. I should of replaced it the first time around.

About how much money is this valve body? The AC Delco one on ebay is 300 after you ship in the core.

Thanks Frank.

After more research and google, could it be the speed sensor?

I'm gonna go check that real quick. Do they go bad? I'm gonna check if a wire broke.

Wire wasn't broke.

I dropped it off at my tuner. It worked some of the way there suprisingly...he has HP Tuners, so I hope he can figure it out.

Yea the pressure solenoid went out so I ordered a fresh valve body with new solenoids. Unfortunately it burnt up 3-4 clutches. It's all good now...

yea sorry to bring up an old thread but my car is doing the same thing but it wont shift into 3rd or 4th at wot or mild throttle, only when completely off. My tranny rebuilder took a ride with me today and thinks the input sprag in the 3-4 is gone. He put an ac input sprag in it when he said the borg-warner is a lot stronger. That would make my second input spragg now I have broke.

Glad yours is back to running
