Default Opinion on TCI converter...for TH400

Any opinion on TCI converters for a TH400 swap? I'm looking at the streetfighter, or super-streetfighter...

Z28hokie,
I like 'em! Seriously, I spend a lot of time on the torque converter dyno, making the SF and SSF converters the most efficient out there. If you'll list your mods and what your goals are for your car, I'll help you pick the correct converter.

I have run countless TCI converters on many of my cars over the years.I have gone as fast as 11.20s all moter and 9.90s with spray . I dont think you will have a problem with TCI and if any should arise just give kevin a call he will take care of you. Those times were behide a 406sbc in a full weight 84 regal that was driven on the street. Those were my younger years, lol now im alittle slow .HAHAHAH

Thanks for the responses guys.

It'll be a 422, very mild cam (need to pass the sniffer)- so probably 230/230 ish, 10.5:1 compression or so. 3.89 gears, 3600lb raceweight, no power adder.

I'm looking to go as fast as possible, but not a dedicated race car, not a daily driver either though- since I've moved my favorite tracks are 200 miles away- so it needs to be decent on the street. (decent being a relative term, but 4000 or something would be out of the question).

The motor isn't built yet- but I'm looking to do the trans swap this spring anyway, do you all do rebuilds too- or just new transmissions? I've got a core in my garage off a Chevelle.

I was thinking a streetfighter, but before just ordering it- I know the LS1 requires a longer hub or something (sorry, only familiar with manuals)- so was wondering about that.

Also have a friend looking for a converter for his '78 Z28.
3800lb raceweight
496cid
250 shot N2O
10.5:1 compression
246/253 @.050 solid roller cam, .663/ .680 lift, 110 LSA
4.11 rear

Car will mostly be trailered- but some streetability would be nice- so he's looking for a street/strip converter as well (but not anywhere near as much "street" as I am)

He was looking at part # 242001 or 241001

Do not go any lower than a 3500 stall, you will want more converter if you go smaller. If your looking for the fastest you can get your car to go, then a higher stall will help you get there. Im changing to a 3800 myself this spring hoping for a possible 1.5 to 2 tenth over my 3000tci now.

How are they on the street (3500 stall)- especially since it's not lockup like a 4L60E?

Your gearing will tighten up the feel of the converter , it wont feel as loose, as for streetablity ,no problem , just may take some time to get used to how it feels. When your all ready to buy a converter and are not sure what to buy, Kevin winstead at tci will help you out give him a call sometime, hes very good knowledge wise, and very nice to talk to.

z28hokie,
We could do a Streetfighter 3000 stall converter for your car, but add the pilot extension and bolt pattern for the LS1 engine. It would stall around 3500 behind your 422. If you'd like to be a little more aggressive, we could do a custom stall...3800 stall. It would be very streetable in your combination and wouldn't cost you any more.

Your friend could use one of our new Ultimate Streetfighter converters. Part number 241003. It would be similar to your custom 3800 stall converter, but would have a steel stator.

Thanks. Can you PM me with pricing for the custom converter? 3800 sounds great- didn't know it would still be streetable without being able to lockup- but that's awesome!
