Default Converters

I have to get my rear main seal replaced within the next couple of weeks and since the transmission has to be pulled back to do the job, my mechanic said he would install a new torque converter for me with no extra labor charge. I figure that now would be the perfect time because it will save me several hundred dollars down the road. My hang up is that the car is a daily driver and drivability is extremely important. I want the car to still maintain some decent street manners but at the same time I want a good increase in performance. I know some companies like Circle D offer a more basic converter for around $400 and then the high performance versions for about $750. My question is what would be the best for my car and for the way I drive it?

i have the same wants as you. my car never sees the track. just something fun for a street car/Daily Driver. i went with a vigilante 3200 stall. its perfect for a DD. youll be amazed how civil it is driving and it does hit pretty hard. i honestly could step up to a bigger stall. i honestly wouldnt go smaller than a 3800 stall. i think that would be a good size stall. just dont go cheap on a converter. go with quality proven stalls such as Vigilante, Yank, Circle D.

since you've got 3.73s'(in your sig) and, presumeably stock stall of 1800,don't go anything below 3000. the 3.73s' with a 'stall' will give you the good street manners you're after. how high above 3000 is up to you.

i just put a Yank SS 3600 in my car last week...it's a little loose with the stock 3.23's....but honestly...unless i'm thinking about it, i don't even notice it's stalled....so i recommend SS3600....i think you will be happy with it...honestly...i think i would be okay with a 4000 stall myself...and i DD my car every single day....it definately wouldn't have the best street manners, but personally, i could deal with it after driving the 3600 for a week now...

Manners don't change much from a 3200 to a 4k. They feel like you have a stall and once you get used to it you love it. The torque swell up is an amazing feeling from an aftermarket converter. If I had to DD my car I think I would choose an SS3600. Converters do suck gas in the city, but the compromise is worth it IMO. As a weekend warrior I wouldn't choose the SS4k I have, I think I would choose a PT4400

thanks for the help. From the sounds of it, I think i'm going to start looking for something in the 3600-4000 range. Also, since all of yall have stalls, what kind of Tranny coolers are you running and also did any of you have to install shift kits or strengthen the tranny to put up with the added stress of a new converter?

Thanks for the video man! That really helped me see how the car would react... If that was a 3200 I think that a 3600-4000 will be pretty crazy. If i keep my stock wheels, what are the chances of me keeping traction with those little tires?

No traction on street tires period. My 4k busts em loose at anything under 55 mph, and even after that if conditions arent perfect it'll spin them. It'll spin them in the rain at 75+mph. It's spooky ****

haha. sounds like a lot of fun to me. I already can't drive if I have the ASR off because it likes to break them loose so much. But right now it comes down to wheels and tires or getting this rear main seal fixed (torque converter installed when it is fixed). What kind of tranny cooler are you running? Also did you have to do a shift kit? And one more question, does your converter have lock up?

All Yank 4L60-E converters have lock - up unless a special order is requested by the customer

Yank, thanks for your response. I think I am leaning towards a 4000 stall just because I don't want to go too small a regret it later. I tried to call the number, but apparently verizon wireless towers are not working near me, so could you please PM me with more details about your converters and a price with shipping included to zip code: 29078

Dave at Yank is a good guy to deal with. He even threw in a free t shirt for the old lady I'm running the B+M 70274 cooler. Its about the biggest you can fit in front of the radiator. It gets hot in the south.

I know that's right. Im from SC and it is pretty hot here. That looks like a good cooler so I will probably get that. I just hope that a 4000 wont be too much for a daily driver.

Talked to Dave at Yank today and he said he would do either a 3600 or 4000 stall with one of his tranny coolers for $775. Doesn't sound like a bad deal to me.... just gotta start saving up for tires now.

I have read some stuff on here about needing to replace the valve springs when a stall is installed. How important is it too replace them? Money is a little tight right now.

replace valve springs? maybe when you install a cam. a stall has nothing to do with valves springs.

Thats what i was wondering. I just figured I would ask. Maybe it has something to do with the higher RPM of the shift points once a stall in put in, but im not sure.
