Default Cracked Flexplate?

What can cause a flexplate to crack like this??

As far as I know, the transmission was never separated from the engine since it was built. ~90k miles.

Acceleration and Deceleration, heat, cold-Basically wear in a hi-po stock flexplate app. stock flexplates are notorious for this in fbodys. If your trans to engine bolts were tight and the motor and trans mounts were good, then just chalk it up to a tired flexplate. Replace it with an SFI certified one for a few bucks more and always use new hardware on the install.
Good Catch
While the trannys out now would be a good time to replace the oil pressure sender, on the back of the motor if it's an LS.

The whole motor is out and disassembled down to the bare block now. It's a great time to replace everything... LOL. Thought it spun a bearing or threw a rod or something something due to previous light engine knocking sounds when driving around and regular KR readings from the PCM (had to retard timing to 23 degrees to get KR reduced), as well when the flexplate broke, it took out a corner of the rear cover and caused chunky oil to stream out of the bellhousing.

GM changed flexplate design sometime after the 98s',the flexplates prone to have problems have 'peanut shaped' holes, the flexplates that are NOT prone to have problems have round holes.

This is not uncommon, and why I swapped in a '98 plate
on my first converter.
