Default A4 removal question

When removing the driveshaft from an a4 car do you have to plug or somehow cover the tailshaft of the trans so fluid doesn't come out??

Some fluid might come out and a plug would be nice if you are trying to save the fluid. If you are just removing the DS then only a small amount will come out. It will not totally drain the trans. Just make sure to top it off when your done. Vince

Get a plug. ... If anything, just to keep things clean while your working. I almost broke my tail bone on trans fluid a few years ago so I REALY can't stand seeing spilled fluid. Drives me bat-**** crazy!!

Well; all ready to pull the motor/trans out the top but I can't get the e-clips off of the trans cooler lines that go into the trans; any special trick to use here?

You could always use an 18mm wrench and remove the fittings from the case. After everything is all out then go after the clips. Make sure to replace the clips with new ones and also that they fit tight. Use a bit of Teflon sealer or anaerobic sealer on the fittings threads when you go to reinstall them if you plan on reusing the old fittings. This way you don't have a leak at rthe threads and you should be fine. Vince

I tried using a 18mm wrench and couldn't get the dang fitting to break loose..

Not a whole lot of room to work in there;even with the trans dropped down a bit.

Three questions. What is the clip there for? Why not just unscrew the fitting from the tranny? And can a little screwdriver be used to take the clips out?

The clips hold the lines in to the fittings.
If you can pop out the clips, the lines slide right out.
I used a tiny flathead to pop em out.

Wouldn't it b much easier just to unscrew it from the transmission and than all you have to do is screw them back in?

It was a pain, but i was able to pop the clips off. You could take out the fittings, if you can get a wrench in there, but i had an easier time with a tiny flat head screwdriver.

Whatever is easier for you to do is fine. Ive done it both ways, and removing the clips is the faster way to disconnect the lines, but just unscrewing the fittings is not hard either.
