Default 6spd auto

I have an 02 SS A4,I hate the 4 spd auto thats one mistake they made with these cars. So I found there is a 6spd auto that fits and works great but I have not found anyone that has swaped out their A4 for the A6. I know its going to cost atleast $5000 to do but I dont wanna spend that kind of money till I hear from someone that already has one in their car. So my question is does has anyone sawped their A4 for the A6 and was it worth the money and trouble?

I did a search and found this. Something in reference to a TCI 6 Speed for our cars. This Tech member did it!

found one for $4445 and one for $5700. I was looking into doing the M6 swap but figured if Im going to spend that much money I could get the A6 instead. I dont know why they went with the A4(stupid) I bought the car last July and its the first auto sports car I bought. Kind of wish I would have shopped around now but the car was already geared and has a great full exhaust

Other than the novelty of the 6 speed auto, is there any other reason you are considering the swap? The 6L80e is a nightmare at the moment. No one has perfected the tuning on the A6. If someone were to develop a true 100% stand alone operating system for the 6L80e then it might be a viable alternative to the 4L60e and 4L80e But unfortunately right now it isn't.

Just out of curiousity what do you mean no one has perfected the tuning?

True, but the 4L80E has 3 sets of planetaries, so it can be made into a 6 speed.

The 6L80e is 100% computer controlled. So the engine and transmission tuning are dependet on eachother. The ways people have been tuning engines for years is now causing issues with the 6L80e transmissions because it effects the pressures in the transmission. I am by no means a tuner, but we have rebuilt quite a few 6L80e transmissions that have been roasted by tuners experimenting with their transmission tuning trying to get rid of the flairs between shifts and whatnot. Take a look over at corvette forum and you will see all the headaches that have come along with the 6L80e transmissions.

Well that makes me glad I didn't get that LS/6l80e setup for my swap after all.

That's too bad really. A 6L80e option (that works) would be awesome to shove in an F-Body. Especially since a new trans IS going to be my next large purchase. C'est la vie!

The TCI unit is a 4l80e based tranny but obviously is converted into a 6speed isntead of a 4. We know a 4l80E can fit and since they'd be roughly the same overall size the swap shouldnt be to terrible...

straight from TCI's page:

the 4L80E-based TCIŽ 6x Six-Speed Automatic Transmission is a fully programmable transmission that gives you six forward gears (2.97, 2.23, 1.57, 1.18, 1.00, 0.75) for quicker acceleration and increased fuel economy at cruising speeds and is capable of handling up to 850 horsepower.

When used with the required TCIŽ Transmission Control Unit for shift point programming and the optional TCIŽ Paddle Shifter or bump switch set-up for manual mode gear selection, this automatic transmission gives GM powered vehicles the most functional and modern drivetrain combination on the market. This innovative transmission design is also available in a GM performance drivetrain package #271600P that includes the TCIŽ 6x Six-Speed Transmission, transmission control unit, paddle shifter, wiring harness, transmission cooler and dipstick.

I did a search on google and found lots of pics of a GM 6l80e on a ls3 motor being put into all types of things. most say its not much bigger than a 4l60e but is very compact. so may be worth looking into finding a gm tranny and computer out of a junkyard from a truck or suv

http://www.speartech.com/ Go down on the elft to 6l80 swap project. gives you an diea of fitment and maybe some insight to controlling it.

First off...the 6L80 in an F-body is wholely doable. The issue of tuning is not that is can't be done, it's finding the RIGHT tuner. I know several tuners who have no problems with making them run beautifully. Since my swap from a 4L70 a 4 speed automatic is as useful to me as a 4 speed manual. So yes, you are looking at about $5k for the conversion, but once you go 6speed you'll despise a 4spd.

If you EVER plan on doing any performance mods to the car DO NOT I repeat DO NOT put the 6L80e in your car. I don't care what anyone says. I see this day in and day out. NO ONE is getting these transmissions to live long term in performance cars. If all you want to do is drive your car then it will be fine, but no racing is recommended because it will only be a matter of time befor it starts slipping and fails on you.
