Ok guys, I am about to start a 4l80e swap in my procharged trans am. I am not liking the th400 in there now and want overdrive. After driving the car on the freeway a few times I realized I needed overdrive real quick. A 3000 converter and 4.11 gears and 70mph don't mix well regarless of what most think. So I found this 4l80 on ebay for 325 shipped to my shop. Its out of a 95 chevy van. I pulled the pan off and it looks really clean so I am contemplating rebuilding it or running it till something lets go or it starts slipping. Before the guys that have unlimited budgets get on here and say call blah blah and have them rebuild it, no. I go really fast on a small budget. Labor is free to me so I don't mind pulling when I have to. I am thinking putting a converter in it, a shift kit, then running it. What do the budget minded guys think? Here are some pics of it. Lmk, Josh
Thanks for sharing the info.

Mike, I think I know you from the 348/409 Forum don't I? I use the same screen name there and Ebay. I haven't been on there in awhile. I have the black 61 BelAir hardtop with a bbc/th400/12 bolt 4.88's. I've found a 4L80E a month or so ago....probably going to try to get it into the x-frame soon.
OP: Thanks from me for the info too. I'm looking at using the "little black box" manual controller. Wish I could come up with an affordable convertor.

Great to see ya on here. I have been coming here for the LT1 section mostly. I've got a 97 SS and a 95 Z28. They've been stealing all my 61 funds and time. Alot of stuff going on down here. Hey if you hear of a 61 wagon tailgate anywhere please let me know. I've been looking for about 4 years now with no luck.
Sorry for the thread hijack everyone, but I had to take a moment to catch-up with an old friend.

Car fired up tonight. Put all the trans fluid I had in it and its not up on the dipstick yet. I need to get some more fluid this weekend. I have been burning the midnight oil getting this thing back together. I have a month off of school and hope to get all the bugs worked out of it before I have to go back. Taking the time to get all the small details done right has really kicked my butt. I will let everyone know how it turns out when I get some more fluid in it. Hopefully this weekend.

The wheel rolled this evening. I put 3 more qts of trans fluid in it and fired it up. Clicked it into reverse, wheels went backwards, clicked it into drive and wheels rolled forward. Checked level and its to the lower mark on the dipstick. I am gonna bleed the brakes tomorrow night and put it on the ground.

The transbrake will require internal mods, so it may as well be freshened and inspected while you are in it.
A stock 4L80E has a weak third gear clutch pack that needs to be addressed, usually a used one the third clutches will be glazed and live a short life in a performance application. Sometimes you can get lucky though.

I had the car for 15 years and was ready to move on to something else. The deal came along to trade and I thought why not. I miss the car and the option of trading back might be there. Just have to see. At the moment I am gonna get this thing up and running and see what it will do.
