hey i need to get a new torque converter for my 98 z28, just rebuilt trans, want a new converter to put in, pretty much stock engine and trans, just headers and exhaust and slp air cleaner. so dont need a hard core converter, just a street car. cant figure out where to get one that will work good without spending $350. please help i have had the car for 2 weeks now and been broke down i garage for 12 days.. i wanna drive it again lol

You don't want to spend 350$? A converter is the number one spot you don't want to go cheap on. Heads intake headers etc are all ok.. Get a cheap converter, hate it.

You can get a brand new ptc for 550$ shipped with a trans cooler.

Revmaxx is an option but I highly advise not going with it. Most have horrible experience, few have good.

If your going to go cheap on the converter, dont go at all. Ive seen too many stories on here when i was considering going cheap of the converters killing the trans after 5k miles. Buy a yank, vig, protorque or circle D

damn is there a way you can fluch out a stock one, or prolly jus bite the bullet and spend the cash, what would be a good stall for a stock set up like i have.. would 2000 be ok, i dont wanna do any performance upgrades untill my chassis and suspension r done so... and this is first time i have rebuilt a trans. i dont wanna spend alot of money on a converter if for some reason it doesnt last

I bet you I am one of the cheapest (if not THE cheapest) Camaro owners on this board, and I agree with everyone else. I paid for a Vig 3600 stall when my trans went out last time and it was the best money I ever spent on this car.

WARNING: If you get a higher stall, you will need to get a "tune" which I did for $80 mail order over a year ago.

However, I knocked a full 5 tenths off my 1/4 mile time and it makes the car feel like it doubles the horsepower with no other mods. Stock with lid and stall gets me 12.9 on a good day at the track.

Just to show you how cheap I was, when my trans broke, I got one out of a junk yard instead of rebuilding because of the cost, but still knew the value in the high stall. The 3600 stall I have I am so used to that I can't even tell it's stalled now, and when people drive it and just putter around (like the mechanic moving it) they can't even tell it's stalled at least with the Vig 3600.

Yea I jus think that's alittle to much for a stock car, but if it works that is awesome.. should have jus done the six speed swap would have been about the same price by the time I'm done with this and would have been more fun to drive

This. Quality aftermarket or stock.

stock is 1600-1800. If you go under 3k, its a waste. That is so small you won't even notice it.
3600, I recommend ptc.

That is not too much for a stock car, not even close. I personally would do 4000.
Stalled auto is more fun than a six speed imo. It's all preference.
You would have to have a clutch with a manual.

SS3600 would fit the bill nicely.

A 278mm Trailblazer converter would probably work well and fit within your budget needs.

On a budget, I wouldn't get a shift kit. Spend that money on a quality converter.

I dont know the insides of a 4l60e enough to help on that, someone more educated needs to chime in. If you don't get a definite answer, start a new thread for it instead of one about which converter to buy.

If you are truely on a tight budget and have the transmission out, the the Circle D 278mm converter is a good option. You will definitely feel a big difference in the cars performance.

Ideally if you plan to build the car and add additional HP over time then the Circle D 245mm converter is your best bet. As stated don't cheap out in the converter dept. This is the ideal choice if you can swing the coin. I'd have Chris spec you out a 3500-3800 converter.

Good luck!!

what about a tci 242934 its a 3800 stall a guy has one on here for sale for 400, it is a 3800 stall, that seems alittle crazy for street use, but you all have more knowledge than me, if you think itll will work good on a car that is driving on the street all the time ill probably buy it

The biggest problem with buying a used converter is that it may have come out of a car that had the tranny trash out or the lock up clutch could be on the way out and ready to take your fresh transmission with it. The TCI converters lock up clutch doesn't have the best reputation to start with. It may be fine, but unless you have credible history info on it, I'd sure think long and hard before jumping in head first.

The right 3800 stall won't feel bad for daily driving and most people wish they had gone higher after their first stall purchase. If you add more rear gear later, the stall will feel tighter during normal driving conditions.
