LQ4 to TH400 Conversion????????? Confused
O.K. guys, I have been all over this website and I still can't find the real answer I am looking for. I have a TH400 that I am bolting to a 2002 LQ4. Can I modify the LQ4 flexplate? Or do I have to buy an after market flexplate? And, do I need a spacer? Or what? I am going to run a GEN1 torque converter if that helps. What do I need and/or what do I need to do? Thanks

do you know what flywheel is on the engine now? maybe post a pic
if the engine had a 4l80e trans, it will have a .400 spacer on the crank, and a "flat" flywheel-you can tell if it has a spacer, as only about 1/8" of the crank sticks out past the rear seal
so its crank, .400 spacer, flywheel-GM used to sell it as a kit, but now by parts
if it was a 4l60e, no spacer and the flywheel will have sort of a curve to it
if it has the spacer, flat flywheel, your converter will bolt up, just ck the converter hole alighnment
4l80e's used the same converter snout as a 350/400 trans

I will get some pics up soon. My wifey has the camera in her purse. I went out and took a look at the flexplate and it looks like there is maybe about a 1/16 of clearance between the rear main seal and flexplate. If that helps?

Do you have the same thing that I have going on with the 6.0? I search and look up different threads and posts and it makes my head spin. Lol. I appreciate all the help from everyone on this. I'll have some pics up shortly.

is your flex plate like the flat one on the left or the dished one on the right?
flat one on the left needs a spacer, dished one on the right needs nothing if the converter snout is extended for a th400 to ls1 setup

you can get spacers for the converter if your wanting to use a traditional style sbc converter to engage the pump. However if your looking at getting an aftermarket converter you can just buy one from yank, circle d etc that has the extended snout already and no spacers are needed

I have a question.
Left picture requires what if you use a SBC converter?
Left picture requires what if you use a 400-ls converter?
Right picture requires what if you use a SBC converter?
Right picture requires nothing if you use a 400-ls converter. (got that one) lol
Thanks,
I'm trying to decide on a converter as well. Seems the 400-ls converters cost more $$ and it would be cheaper to get a SBC and adapt it.

Honestly I'm not sure why anyone would use the flat flex plate unless they had to. Picture to the left will require spacer for the plate to move it out far enough to engage the starter regardless of being an Sbc or ls converter. Now I'm not a 100% but I believe if using an sbc with the left u also need spacers on the converter to engage the pump. If using ls converter u only need a spacer and longer bolts for the flexplate.
If using the dished one on the right for sbc u need spacers only for the converter not for the flex plate. I hope I made that clear enough

I take it ur using an sbc converter? To use the one on left u will need flexplate spacer and longer bolts and I believe converter spacers as well. One on right if u go that way u only need converter spacers

I haven't made a decision yet honestly. The car had a stock converter when I had the 403 in it. Was like 1500 stall. I don't really wanna pay $750 for a converter but I know it'll be worth it. I was hoping to pick up a used converter for around $300 most are just SBC converters. There are a few 400-ls converters but not very high stalls. I wanted like a 3600-3800. Was thinking about an MS3 or MS4 cam or similar. This is not a DD just a weekend car to have fun in.
