Well 5k miles ago he had the fluid and filter changed and solenoids cleaned because It was acting sluggish then. Now it's still sluggish, weak and feels like a slip issues round 50mph.
So best suggestion from there would be rebuild or replace?

You mention 3rd gear and probably know that the 3/4 clutch is a weak spot in these transmissions. While it is possible that the 3/4 clutch is simply worn, it is also possible that it is not getting enough pressure due to worn parts (like the AFL valve) in the valve body. I'm no trans expert, but if you/friend have some mechanical skills, here is what I would do:
1. Drop the pan and check the fluid. If it is brown or smells burnt, it is too late - the 3/4 clutch is shot and it is time to rebuild the trans. If the fluid look good, then...
2. Buy a rebuilt valve body off of ebay. Typical cost is around $160. Add to that a new EPS solenoid ($30), separator plate ($20), gaskets ($10) and check ***** ($2). I would also suggest a performance .490 or .500 boost valve from Sonnax or Transgo; this will increase your line pressure and clamp your clutches tighter.
3. Install the boost valve and rebuilt valve body. With luck you will get another 30K+ out of the trans.
4. If it doesn't work better, find a local reputable trans shop to rebuild it. They should give you credit for all the parts you already replaced as they are all part of a quality rebuild.
If you are not comfortable doing this work, a local trans shop should be willing to do this with the understanding that it may not solve the problem.
Sure, a complete rebuild is the correct solution, but this is just my suggestion for a possible cheap and temporary fix. I'm no trans expert, but I have examined several "well used" valve bodies and been stunned by how sticky and marginal some of the critical valves are. I suspect some of those trans were completely rebuilt when a new/rebuilt valve body would have been enough to extend its life.

yea we'll check the fluid and i told him the 3/4 clutch packs were garbage in these cars and prone to going out. if he's needing a rebuild he says he wants to just do a 6 speed swap into it.
