What was the converter to flexplate spacing at the time of install?

Whew! Long thread to find out a couple of welds broke in a converter. Well, that's just the reality of building cars - things go wrong from time to time. I don't see why the issue can't be easily cleaned up by the two parties here.

It's interesting to know that can happen though. I'm not sure I would be able to diagnose it myself. Hell of an inconvenience for both the OP and the shop.

I have enjoyed Frank's info in the past. I think on Thirdgen.org he posted some very helpful info on TransGo shift kit installation. He seems to have a lot of happy customers.

I was thinking this. It is *possible* that at the time of install something could have gone wrong here, either it wasn't properly pushed back, or the trans or plate somehow was crooked. Impossible to know without being there. I just think both parties should make good and move on.

I would say that failure would almost be impossible to relate to installation error. It has nothing to do with converter to flexplate clearance. Just a bad luck deal for both parties.

Wasn't there two transmissions involved in this? What was the issue with the 2nd one?

Hopefully nothing - same as the first. The 2nd transmission should work fine once they get the replacement converter installed.

Neither transmission would work since the converter was bad as it was from the beginning. The converter failed after a two mile test drive.

I lost my first one (PB) after 10 runs at the track, it shifted softer than the stock one, I was warned. (Sun gear) After that I have the second one throwing ECM codes and shaking the car to death. My car maybe gets 500 miles a year, I'm putting the stock trans back in. 38k with over 400 1/4 passes on stock trans w/ vig 3200 no issues.
I wanted a trans that shifted harder than stock and I guess from all the happy people I was the unlucky one.

Did it flare on the shifts or just soft? Many times a loose converter will give you soft shifts. With the shaking, I would be concerned that the issue is in the converter or flexplate. Not sticking up for PB but don't forget to check the other components that can cause a failure or vibration.

What? ON 31 August you had run 600 miles on new (3rd) trans and converter and were very happy. Now in 2013 the new trans has only done 500 miles and is toast?

Dude, please explain because this thread makes my head hurt

sorry for the confusion I put around 500-600 then put away, this year the car got pulled out of storage put around 112 miles then went to crap,
The fourth trans is in the car now and has exactly 98 in town miles and 145 highway miles and on the look for a 4l80 to afraid to take to car shows/races on this trans,..
Hope this helped unconfuse you

Was the converter and cooler replaced each time the trans was replaced?
(Or at least the converter sent out to be opened and cleaned.)

IMHO this is critical info to know before blaming any trans builder.

Wow. Regardless of whether the converter is sending crap into the trans or not - this is a major bum wrap for anyone to be on a 4th trans.

Bummer for Performabuilt trying to do the right thing yet it keeps turning to S#!t and bummer for the customer who is out of pocket and has wasted a huge amount of time yet still does not have a working car.

If it were me, I'd fly down and spend a day with that car to isolate the problem once and for all so that confidence could be restored in my product. Afterall if my business depended on quality, I don't want a bad wrap over something I don't understand. A day away might cost the business a bit but that'd be more than made up for from new sales that came from increased confidence that whatever the issues were, they are fixed and they aren't going to be your problem when you order

Feel sorry for both sides

Interesting thread .... But .... I feel so damn dumbed down after reading this thread with all of the lack of punctuation and grammatical errors; I'm thinking that I may have to take an English class just to get back to my native language.
