Converters, can I have have my cake and eat it too?
My next mod will be a converer. the car is a daily driver with 3.23s. i will eventually do a cam in the 228, 230 area. what i want is tire shredding goodness from a roll, and neck snapping launches from a stop. but from what im ready i can only have one? Either low or high STR? Im not sure what stall to get, itll be a yank, and itll be a 3600 or 4000. the car feels so damn slow with the stock stall. my last lt1 m6 car felt so much quicker. I hate that in certain speeds this car just feels like a turd. please tell me a bigger stall will fix that! 40ish feel terrible if i stomp on it. i recently got a frost tune, and chirping second is so nice, but i want more! what stall is suggested, and is there a happy medium where the car can still go fast at the track, and launch good from all kinds of roll speeds?

I am in the same boat.. I have been compiling a list of goodies for my Firehawk. Just purchased a YANK SS3600 yesterday with 28K cooler. Already have ( in my garage) LS6 heads ( sending off for a port, polish, mil .59 cc) i have a Futral F11 cam, SLP pulley, 7.4's, Katech C5R timing chain,LS7 lifters, Katech PP/ shimmed oil pump, FAST 102, 92mm TB,.. TSP long tubes, 3in ORY, Borla catback,SLP lid,K&N, 30lb SVO's... Throwing on a new water pump, 160 deg tstat for good measure. Should be a beast once its build. Car only has 69K on it.
Doing the headers, Yank within the next two weeks... will add H/C/I once send heads/intake off for porting/matching. I did alot of research with the converter. Dave told me that the SS3600 with 342's is the perfect combo. So, i see a gear change in the not too distant future.
Love your sig pic... Good luck.

Yanks have higher STR's which are better for the neck snapping feeling. A lower STR would keep the torque multiplication lasting longer making it better from a roll. Personally, I'd get a custom converter for your application. I have an FTI SRLS3391 which is a custom one that sits between the 0082 (3200 stall with unknown STR) and 0086 (3600 stall with 1.78 STR). The way Greg described it to me was it would stall about the same as the 0086 but it has a little higher STR so that it will make my 2.73 gears tighter. I've only had it in for a couple days and I haven't really gotten on it but it seems to pull hard everywhere. It was $695 + shipping for a custom billet lockup from FTI.

Hmmm ok. 01zoh6 your car sounds like its gunna be great! I gotta start gathering parts! I'm thinking the yankss3600 but a custom one sounds appealing also. With a ss3600 will it wake it up a little bit from a roll?

It will be better from a roll solely due to the better shift extension any high performance converter will offer. Having a lower STR will help multiply torque higher into the powerband. This will be a very poor comparison, since it is much bigger in terms of difference, but you can almost imagine a high STR as like a positive displacement supercharger, neck snapping off idle acceleration, but it doesn't offer as much as a centrifugal style or turbo would (in this case a vague comparison to a lower STR converter). Higher STR will still be ok from a roll, just not as efficient as a lower STR.

I can daily drive it... keep up with traffic leaving a red light and rpms stay at around 2300-2400.... mash the gas and it flashes 4200... street tires are useless at WOT.... at wot after a shift the rpm only drops to 5500-5600

Well I can't tell you from personal experience about it being "way better" than stock because I don't have a 2.5+ STR converter. Theoretically should it be better? Yes, because of the shift extension, not so much because of the efficiency of the converter's ability to multiply torque across the rpm range.
Pretty much any converter should get rid of the 40mph dead spot if it's setup properly.

Sounds like a monster. I wish there was an ls1 around me with a converter that could give me a ride.

I totally agree with the 5C recommendation. It hits hard and will be a tire fryer without a set of slicks or a sticky drag radial, yet with a sticky tire you will be able to lay down very good ETs. The dead spot will be gone completely.

I plan on taking one soon with my FTI hopefully, I searched and searched for a really good video review of a converter without a lot of luck seeing exactly what I was looking for. You can try looking at youtube. I think one of the better review videos I saw was actually a Revmax customer that got one of their budget converters and it was cold/snowy/wet out so he wasn't doing dig launches.

I plan on putting that converter in my 99 SS bolt-on car...I have stock 3.23 gears for now, but that will change this off-season. I'm hoping for some good results, been talking with Greg for awhile. Should be ordering it this month.
