Default Few basic TH350/TH400 Questions

1. When you engage the transbrake does the car stall up to what ever stall converter you have or does it only stall up to like 2000 rpms or so?

2. Why would you run a TH350 and not a TH400 I always thought the TH400 was stronger? Is there that much of a price difference?

3. Do you always have to manually shift a TH350/TH400 say if your driving around on the street, or will it up and down shift for you?

As for the transbrake it should stall up to your stall to your stall. More people fun the th350 because they are lighter and less rotaional mass than the th400

1. Stalls to your converter stall speed. Not sure what it stalls to on a forced induction setup, but it may differ.

2. TH350 Is lighter and more efficient. But, it's designed for moving lighter loads. TH400's are a little more indestructable and tolerant. A little more inefficient and some weight to it. Obviously it was designed for use in dump trucks instead of cars!

3. I'm sure you can get a regular pattern automatic. But most of us get reverse pattern manual valve bodies, which is why you hear about that alot.

Yes all TH350/400's are 3 speeds. And if you want to have a transbrake you must have a reverse pattern with a manual valvebody. If you want to use a TH350 you should upgrade the drum and sprag, as the TH350 is just not made for cars as heavy as a 4th gen Fbody. Some guys do not upgrade and never have a problem, others blow thiers up quickly.

I bought a TH400 because I knew I would be upgrading to a stroker motor and a large shot of nitrous. The last TH350 I had built for racing was in a 79 Trans Am I had many years ago with a big block in it. That tranny went out three times in one season before I replaced it with a TH400.

since the rotating weight 350-400 trans is about the same, the differance is that the direct drum assy. rotates backwards in first gear, in the 350 it's a little slower, then the 400, that means it might take a little less power to run it . but the planets are not as strong. ask any builder.jk

Are the majority of guys that are switching to TH350/400's really fast? I mean, I just want an 11 second car, won't my 4L60 take that?

Yes the 4l60 will work fine if built right. But just an 11 second car. What then it never ends.If you have a turbo 400 you know you'll have years of realiability even under the most brutal of punishings!
