Default What is an acceptable trans temp for built 4L80e?

Finally got my car running and have been monitoring the transmission temps of my built 4L80e. It takes awhile to get up to a measurable temperature, but it's generally around 140*, unless I do a lot of stop & go city driving, I've seen it get as high as 160* to maybe *165 when I've on the throttle and city driving on a warm day.

I have a 11x14 B&M plate style transmission cooler sitting behind my intercooler, attached to my AC condenser/radiator, with stock fbody puller fans.

Putting down ~ 650 RWHP

I haven't had a trans temp gauge in any car of mine recently so I don't really know what "normal" would be with this configuration. Or if my sending unit is reading accurately...but I have no reason to expect otherwise.

140 is good. 165 is getting warm but okay. 180 is when I start to worry.

FWIW: I run about 30' hotter when running a 3:08 (highway) rear compared to my 4:10 (strip) rear (10 converter). So if you are running a taller rear, it would explain why your temps are higher than it could be.

I'm running 3.42's in the stock 10 bolt. I don't think it's gone much above 160 but my trans temp gauge reads 100, 150, then 180. The warmest I've seen it get is ~1/2 way between 150 and 180 so I'm assuming that's about 165*. Once I'm moving again, it drops a bit.

I guess I could always try adding a fan to the cooler to see if it helps. It's been mid-upper 80's here but will get in upper 90's this summer when I'd be driving it.

Your temps are perfect. Anything under 200* is acceptable...

My brand new Ecoboost truck's tranny runs 192-195* all of the time... Only once have a seen 202* and that was towing 5000lbs.

I think 160-180* is perfect.

This is good to know. The other night I was doing some highway pulls with a buddy and my trans temp was in the 170's and I started to get a little worried.

I agree, 140-160 is no problem. 160-180 is ok, 180-200 if you are beating on it. Over 200 starts to scare me.

I have a remote cooler with a 180 degree T stat in it. Do you guys think that is to high a temp for the fan to start? I live in a very hot climate so I'm a little worried about it.

I need to log trans temp next time I get the car out but this thread gives me a idea of temps to look for.

Stock transmissions run 200+ daily in summertime heat, hell their fluid is routed through the radiator which acts as a warmer until the fluid has reached the same temp as the coolant, which is 200+ is most vehicles. These transmissions can last 2-300k under these conditions. However, I don't care for my transmission to get over 200. The fluid has not broken down at that temp but that is just my preference. My cooling system is a B+M plate and big braided lines with AN fittings and a dedicated fan and it is mounted in the front bumper. My temps stay 140-160 even during the summer. Friday at the track they reached 180-190 or so after hot lapping the car.

Thanks for the info, mine is similar set up. I think I'll drag it out today and see how it does.

Much over 200 and its time to think about additional cooling however if you beating it hard or have a stall and around town temps may get that high and higher for short times intermitantly and this will not cause and issue. Certanly if you are seeing temps continuous over 200 andor any temps over 220 you need more cooling. I deally i like average temp to be under 180 140 to 160 ideal though in some really hot climates its may not be feasable to stay that low or possible. Sounds like so far your temps are just fine.
