4l60e and 4l80e comparsion
I'm at the point in my build to where I need to choose transmissions. I have a 2006 4l80e, 2005 4l60e and 199? th400 all sitting in my garage. I search this forum for answers but haven't found exactly what I'm looking for. I've learn the 4l80e can handle more power than the 4l60e and th400 making it stronger. Also know the 4l80e will eat 20hp more than the 4l60e on a dyno. What I'm looking for is a side by side comparison with all three transmission mounted in a vehicle. I want to know which one will be faster street racing, drag racing, highway rolling start racing... If their were three of the same vehicles, same engines(ls3 580hp), same gears, same tires, same weight, SAME DRIVERS, everything the same other than transmissions.

Sounds like you need to set the precedence if you have all three and want a comparison. I can tell you when I switched to an 80 from a 60 I did not see any loss. IF you do a search you will see some dyno numbers of a comparison and I don't remember it being much if any of a loss. As long as you don't use the monster stock 80 converter. I will never go back no matter what. I love the way the 80 works and changes the way the car runs on the street and the track. It is easier and cheaper to rebuild and does not need a long list of aftermarket hard parts to make it work.

Here is a good thread on the subject including a dyno comparison showing about a 5HP loss, not a 20HP loss:

A manual valve body Th400 will be the cheapest and best at drag racing but IMO would suck on the street. I know people did it for years before OD guess im just a bitch. The 400 will also usually dyno the lowest depending on weather the OD units have triple discs and can lock at WOT. I had the same dilemma last year having all three transmissions sitting on the floor. Im glad I went with the 4L80e. I got my used one with unknown origins for $150 bucks and put in a $120 trans go 2 kit, its been great so far with my turbo setup. The shifts just feel so much better vs the 4L60e, I love the gear ratios in the 80e, it doesn't have that huge split between 1st and 2nd gear.

Thank for all the info.... 4l80e IT IS!! I just need to find a cross member bar for the trans. I've seen k members for Monte Carlo S.S g-bodies at summit and jegs for 4l60 and 4l65 but none for 4l80's
