Default changing trans fluid ?

i just had my converter installed. they charged me for the install+fluid. when they mean +fluid is that 5-6quarts of new fluid for the trans or just a lil bit to put in the TC??
my other question is...if i wanted to change the trans fluid. could i just drop the pan, let it drain, and then refill it? is there and kind of write up when it comes to changing the trans fluid?

thanks J

i changed mine the other day. i have a drain plug on my BBK pan but to answer your question, yes, just drop the pan, measure how much drained out, retorque the pan in place (dont overdo it there are torque specs on it, though i cant remember offhand what they are) and refill. when pouring in new fluid, drive the car around the block quick to get the new fluid cylced into the tranny, then check the level again. if you need to add some, make sure to at least click the shifter through the gears before checking again. two things to remember are 1.)be careful with the gasket if you dont intend to replace it, they are fragile and will rip apart easily (though it may come apart anyway so have a new one or at least some silicone ready.) 2.) if you start out low remember to add more SLOWLY. the last thing you want to do is overcompensate and then have to either drop the pan all over again, or pumop some out through the dipstick tube. hope this helps.

edit: this is what i do if my fluid looks ok. if its a little burnt, i would make sure to drain the torque converter AND blow out the tranny cooler lines too. (just something to remember)

Are you going to change the filter while your at it? If so, the filter will come with a gasket. (At least mine did )

Yes, there is a gasket around the trans pan. I think what Hyper Chick meant was that GM sells a package that has a new pan gasket, a new filter, and an new filter gasket / seal whatever you want to call it. I went to a GM dealer to get a new pan gasket and filter and this is what they gave me.

I assume you could probably just buy the pan gasket if you were not going to change the filter at the same time.

I did change the filter, and it was a pain in the ***! Let me rephrase that. The filter is a piece of cake, its the seal that comes with the filter that is REALLY difficult to replace, and I'm not sure how necessary it is to replace the filter seal. For that matter, I'm not sure how necessary it is to replace the filter. I cut my old filter open after replacing it and it had a few small metal flakes / particles. It was nowhere near clogged. I had about 15,000 miles on the car at the time. YMMV if you have a lot of miles on the car...
