Default 4l60 questions

I looked through the stickies, and went a few pages back to see if I could find my answers, nope, didn't happen. I have a trans from a '96 Impala SS that I am doing a LS swap to, and not sure everything will work together. For now the motor will be slightly built, 350-400- hp.

So, my questions are as follows;
1) What years of 4l60 and or 4l60e will work with a LS?

2) Will the bolt pattern for fly wheel to the TC match up?

3) Any difference in the pilot diameter and or depth?

4) I know the LT has better lower end and the LS has better top end, the Impala SS has full weight and 3:42 gears, what size stall should I go with for a everyday driver with mild power and still want good performance? For the LT, I when it was stock I went with a 3,000 stall, I believe it will need to be a bit higher with the LS, correct?

5) What other questions should I be asking that I have not?

Only '98 through '06 4L60E/4L65E from V8 vehicles (and not the Corvette) will bolt up directly to an LS1 engine. Later models will also bolt up correctly but may need a compatible PCM.

You have an "LT" style 4L60E and LT style converter. They will bolt up with the addition of a spacer on the flexplate and elongated holes on the flexplate. (Or a dual pattern flexplate.) Here are a bunch of thread on the subject:

https://ls1tech.com/forums/automatic...s1-4l60-e.html

https://ls1tech.com/forums/automatic...ranny-ls1.html

https://ls1tech.com/forums/automatic...006-4-8-a.html

https://ls1tech.com/forums/automatic...urus-help.html

IMHO - Unless the '96 trans has been rebuilt and strengthened, your LS engine will probably shred it due to its many miles and weaker parts compared to newer models.

Ok, read through the links you posted. I do not want all the hassle of having to find this part in that year range and so on. I've done it in the past, don't care to make the same mistake twice. So, knowing that, which years of 4l60(e) or 4l80(e) do i need to look for, that will bolt right up, need no spacers and voodoo magic to work?

The 0411 and typical harness will support any '96 through '08 4L60E/4L65E/4L70E.
(Somewhere around '09/'10 incompatible changes where made and the connector pinout changed; I don't think it started in '08.)

But not a 4L80(anything)? If not, it may not be that big of a deal. I had a 80 in the Impala originally, I used a GHM trans controller to do it. Simple to install, and easy to use. What years of 80 will bolt up to the LS with no voodoo?

I just noticed that you are from AA, do you have a shop there? I am just north of you, Clarkston area.

Why choose a 65E over a 60E? Nvrmd, figured it out....

No, I run an Internet security and software company in Ann Arbor. This is just my hobby and "change of pace".

Ok, thanks for all the help. I am split between running a 60 or a 80. I know I will build a better motor in the future, common sense says to run the 80, seeing I will need it and I have a controller already.....
But just coming home from the military is going to keep it a "budget" build for now and I need to locate a 80 trans, tc, dip stick & tube, cross member, drive shaft and possibly a different wire harness and or adapter if I run the 80 and use the 0411 comp. to run it, sound correct? I need to find out what year of trans and flywheel to get to keep it as much of a stock plug and play that I can.

Your summary of a 60 to 80 swap is right. Lots of detailed threads here on that subject.

PM me if you want my feedback on any parts you see on CL or ebay, etc.
