Hello guys, i just bought a 02 z28. The car have 196k miles it is a very clean owned by an old guys I'm a second owner. I want the car to have some fun at the track and a daily drive it. I going to put all the bolts one in the long run. Now the question is can i bid in put a 3600 stall in a 196k miles 4l60e?
Like to see if somebody else did that in high millage trans. and what results you get?

You can and it will probably be ok for a bit but that is alotta miles and you risk damaging the new converter if it fails .

Yes, i know is huge risk. That is why i asked to see how many lucky people did that with good results. I ask because i found a use converter a very good price. I just move from my home town of Puerto Rico to Las Vegas and bought 02z just to play around but I have no resource here that i can thrust to make performance rebuild in a 4l60e. My thinking is instead of rebuilding the 4l60e i going to swap for a th400 to forget about transm. failures for some time. If i going to invest in a good converter i prefer to do it in one for a th400.
hmm today the 4L60E can be built to handle alot more than you might imagine,

I wouldn't put a new converter in a trans with that many miles, who knows how much longer it will last.
Why would you want a th400 in a daily driver? Any decent trans builder should be able to make a 4l60e last in a mild car.

You have reached about the lifespan of a 4l60e. Not to be a downer but I think its realistic to think that the clutches are probably just about worn out with that many miles. If you insist, service the trans when you install it, and maybe even spring for a deep pan to increase fluid capacity and help it run a little cooler. Then I would service it once a year for every year it lives.

Obviously you have to pull the tranny to install the converter. It's hard to imagine not getting into it while it's out when it has that many miles. Some components are bound to need freshening. The hi-stall converter won't affect the remaining life of the tranny negatively as long as you're running a good cooler. Regardless, you don't want to have to pull it a second time. Do it right and do it once.
^^^ +1.
Besides the 3/4 clutch, two weak spots in the 4L60E are the forward sprag and the sun shell. If either breaks, it is likely to spread ground up metal through the converter and cooler. This then requires sending the converter out for opening and cleaning, and replacing the aftermarket cooler; all in addition to rebuilding the trans.
There are several threads here where the OP drove much harder with his "fun" new converter and broke the old sprag or sun shell.
GM updated the sun shell starting in 2003; therefore an updated GM shell or the Sonnax Smart Shell are recommended.
Many builders install the stronger BorgWarner dual-cage sprag.
