How does a bump shift work?

How does a bump shift work? For, say, a 4L85E and a 6L80E, I'm guessing that for the old tech 4L it would be manual using the cable as usual but with R and N blocked off but with the new tech 6L it would work the clutches electrically as usual?

The shifter has switches. One for manual mode one upshift and one for downshift which are inputs for transmission control module.There is no skip shifting and module has programming and parameters manual mode; which can inhibit up and down shift. Trying to down shift to low at 50mph probably not going to happen,, nor OD at 10 mph. The old ratchet shifters only upshifted. A "gate" shifter and a modified valve body could operate as a clutchless manual. A gate shifter isn't actually a bump shifter.

Ratchet shifters can "bump" shift up or down just fyi...that's part of why they're such a huge pain
This is all the guy was asking...holy moly...there's about 1000 videos showing how this is done...with all kinds of different shifters. Gated, ratchet, column, electronic paddle attachment, etc etc
