Hi guys,
I have a tranny cooler question. I have a 1985 S10 pickup I'm working on with a 5.3, 4L60E tranny. The engine and tranny is really tight and have no room to run the cooler lines to the front, so I mounted my Derle electric 8" 500 CFM cooler fan on the frame under the pickup box near the rear end about six feet from the fittings. My question is will this work? The fan is mounted horizontal, only about 3" below the bed, 3/8" rubber hoses. Can I use those banjo fittings (may be restrictive) I've seen on ebay for tunnel clearance. I know it is out of the wind stream but will it cool? Will the fan be on all the time? I don't want to destroy a tranny because of this. Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you, stay safe.
Ideally the cooler should be placed somewhere there is good air-flow.
From your description, the location should be fine... an electric fan can also help.
Make sure that the fan that is only 3 inches below the bed-floor is not blowing up at the floor...
If so the air will be hitting a wall and will have to turn 90 degrees. Not good.
Thank you vorteciroc. What do think about the banjo fittings? I know those fittings restrict somewhat, but it is enough to cause a issue? I heard that if the tranny could pump 2 -2 1/2 quarts in 30 seconds you are OK, is this a valid test? Have a good day, stay safe.

I wouldnt use banjo fittings at all. Im sure 90 degree swivel AN fittings will fit for sure?
Thank you 2BFAST. I am not expert in this area, but if I may, I would like to know why you would not use them, are they too restrictive, design flaw or for some other reason unbeknown to me. I know 90* AN fittings flow way better, but they take up too much room and space is a big issue for me bin this particular case. They would be tucked away out of harms way.

All of the above I think. You sure you dont have enough room for at least the 90* AN swivels?
If banjo fittings are the only type of fitting that physically fits in that area... well so be it.
Generally the -AN "Hose-Ends" that are turned (30*, 45* 90*, Etc) flow the best...
The more gradual turn of the tubing used to make the "Hose End" is far less of a restriction than an adapter -AN fitting or a "Banjo" fitting...
Where the fluid hits a wall and is forced to make a HARD 90 degree/ right-angle turn, slowing down the flow of the fluid:
Note: 45 degree -AN fittings are no where near as bad as a 90 degree or more fitting:
Also, more recently some of the fitting manufacturers have been producing some fittings that actually have a gradual turn inside of the fitting.
Similar looking to this:
Thank you again vorteciroc
Those pictures of the fittings look good, but they are NPT. The fittings in a 4L60E are NPSM with no taper, with a NPT fitting with my luck I would splitting the case trying to align it, so I would need a NPSM thread low profile swivel and I can't seem to find one that I can put a 3/8" barb on for rubber cooler line hose. I don't like banjo fittings either and understand what you are saying but I don't want to modify my tunnel if I don't have to. I could see you know what you are talking about and I must do a better job in my research. I will let you know how I make out. Thank you so much for going through all the trouble. Stay safe.
Yes, the Photos that I posted are a mixture of both N.P.T. (National Pipe-thread Tapered) and US Military -AN/ JIC (Army Navy/ USM Joint Industrial Council) fittings and hose-ends.
Yes, the threads that were cut into 4L60E transmission cases are the N.P.S (National Pipe-thread Straight) type...
You can actually find NPS to -AN adapter fittings through many Motorsports parts retailers, such as Summit Racing or Jegs (Jeg Jr is a "Real ***-HOLE").
Here is one example of an adapter for a 4L60E from Summit Racing (they are a sponsor here, and Jeg Jr is a "Massive JACK-***").
Summit Racing currently sponsors one of the Forums on this Website...
So they may provide discounts to members of LS1Tech.com... I do not know.
The fittings and hose-ends are inexpensive unless purchasing a large quantity...
So if you only need a few of these; I probably would not expect a discount.
If the vehicle does not possess the required space in-order to use the Fittings and Hose-Ends that I posted...
Then using the Banjo-Style fittings should be used instead.
So, just to be clear...you're not a fan of Jeg Jr...????
LOL!!!!
HA! LOL!
Maybe I am simply at the NHRA National Events too often...
Until the season before last year, I was driving a Semi-Pro Funny-Car (NHRA Top-Alcohol Funny-Car) and many of the current Professional drivers had to race in the Semi-Pro classes before obtaining their Professional Licenses...
Blah, blah, blah... Sorry. I have gotten to know many of the Professional Drivers and Crew over the years.
I have been seeing little Jeg Jr. for the last 30 years or so; and He is just a Horrible person with absolutely NO sportsmanship!
He yells and screams when he does not win, he cries like a little girl, and he blames his losses on everybody else!
He is rude and nasty to his staff, to the NHRA event staff, to the other racers... and even to his fans!
He has personally been a Jack-*** to me as well.
My father and one of my uncles both have obtained Professional records in their racing careers...
My father recently passed away (about 3 Months ago)... and good old Jeg Jr. starts talking crap about him, just to aggravate me.
Normally I would ignore this behavior from him...
However I am not handling the loss very well.

I'm curious how your front lower air dam and lower frame are set up. The pathway for the ram air going up and into the radiator.
Pics if you have them. Might have a great solution for you.
