I would start out looking at the Drive-Shaft, Universal-Joints, Rear-Differential, Brakes, Wheel-Bearings, all first before looking at the Transmission.
If you see any Brass/ Bronze/ Copper looking debris...
It is time to take the Transmission out.
Note: If the ATF cooler or Radiator with built in ATF cooler... were never flushed out or replaced...
This could be what you are looking at in the ATF.
Also; after a Transmission failure, the Torque-Converter must be cut-open and cleaned... or just replaced.
...as reusing a Torque-Converter will contaminate the ATF also... and damage the Transmission.

Has the motor ever had the mains re-cut?
If it is wearing out one side of the bearing only, it is likely not running on center.
If it wipes the whole thing out, runout on the snout of the converter could be an issue
