Default Only dropped .2 in 1/4

My buddy and I just installed a vig 3200 in my Z28 a couple of weeks ago and I love it. I went to the track last night and was expecting at least a .3-.4 drop in my et. First two passes were 13.5 and 13.6 but I broke the nitto's loose bad both times, even with 2.73's in the back. Third pass raised my tach to around 1600 rpm, got a good launch and still only earned a 13.5 @ 102. My best 60 ft was 2.03. Not even a tenth difference than stock.

I probably just suck at driving .

Nittos need to be really heated to hook. When you do your burnout, do not let off until you see smoke in your rear view mirror. Did you try using a tire pressure in the 18 - 22 lb range?

My tire pressure was at 18 lbs and my buddy said my burnouts were lacking and I should wait a little longer but my last pass I hooked great, improved 60 ft a little but nothing else.

"got a good launch"
"My best 60 ft was 2.03."

That's NOT a good launch. If you can't hook, you're not going to make good use of your converter. Get those Nittos SMOKIN' hot next time. Don't be scared to take the engine up just short of redline and hold it there for a nice solid 5 count. After that, let of the brake with the throttle still down and buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurn all the way up to the line. That way, your tires will still be clean.

Yep smoke the Nittos. Adjust driver mirror to look down at the driver rear tire and watch for smoke

be sure to adjust the PCM shift points, etc. Takes shift tuning as well IMO. I cut .5 - .7 with my converter.

practice your launches. Flashing it hard is not always the best way to go. I've got a 1.80 60' with street tires on my 3200. Just have to roll it out then nail it.

Colonel is right...If you can't hook, the gains from the converter will not be there.

Adjust driver mirror to look down at the driver rear tire and watch for smoke
Come on now. If he needs to adjust his mirror to see his tires smoke he is definately not doing a big enough burnout. Burn them until all you see is white in your rearview mirror. I have street tires and burn them till smoke gets sucked into my vents. Yea I overdue it a little.

Yeah make sure that you spin to the line like the Colonel said, Buddy of mine got pegged by a loose pebble in the face after someone rolled to the line and then launched.

With Nittos you should be able to burn out and stall to 2500RPM and get a good hook to boot. I stall my street tyres (Goodyear GSD3 F1 Eagles) to 1100RPM and get 2.02 60' with a STOCK converter, UNOPENED engine and 3.46 gears.

You definately need to rethink your launch prep technique. I burn out for 2-3 seconds on the water holding at 6000RPM then continue the burn-out right over the staging beam.

i just had a tci ssf3500 installed and bought some nitto dr's, i nailed it right off the line and broke the tires loose, i also have 2.73 gears. i stalled it to about 2000 rpm's and got a better launch, my 1st run was a 13.9 @100, 2nd 13.4@106, 3rd 13.3 @ 106, my 60' times were crap 2.20 being the best one for me that night. my first two runs is when i tried just florring it. the 3rd is when i stalled it. i just need some practice, also i have some et streets coming to me soon so traction wont be hard to come by next time.

My 16" nittos propelled my heavy *** car to low 1.7 60' in good air and high 1.6's in an excellent air. You need to either practice a little or adjust burnout & launch technique.

Franny: 18"nittos must have almost no sidewall. 17" might work better. By way of reference, the 16" seem to perform as well or better than the 17". I realize they don't look as cool as 18".
ET Streets can be too much tire for a 2.73 geared bolt-on car unless your track sucks. When you get them, try using them at higher pressures (over 20lbs) when you first get them (after break-in passes).

Next time I will make sure I see smoke to get the tires nice and sticky.

My next question is- Should you let the trans shift to second during a burn out? Some poeple say don't let it shift because it puts a lot of stress on the stock tranny, so I leave it in first (granted, the rpm's have not been close to red line, it will be next time).
I have also been told it's ok to let it shift during a burn out.

Ben, next time out I'll make a pass in the car, and you can rest assured I'll do an adequate burnout!

Once you get the launch down, you'll love the converter change. There is still plenty of life left in those tires, you just need to hone your burnout/launch technique.

With 2.73 gears you should be able to get the tires plenty hot in 1st gear. At your powerlevel with 2.73 gears you're likely to bog if you shift into 2nd thus heating your tranny fluid quickly (since the converter is working HARD when your tires are moving slowly in relation to your engine speed.)

Im running 16" nitto's & always do a 5sec burnout once they start to smoke, Also I keep the pressure at 15psi. Normally I leave the light at idle, Once the car just starts to roll.. Then I get into it. You need to check you shift point.. When I swap over to the Vig my shift points were way off & shifting too early. Before I put the cam in I would shift 6200-6300.
