Rebuilding my tranny. Need an honest opinion and some advice
I am looking to rebuild my other 4L60e and was seeking some wisdom/advice. I have never rebuilt a transmission before, but have faith in my mechanical ability. People constantly say that it is difficult and not to attempt it. For those of you who have done it, is it really that hard ? I know the automatic transmission is pretty complicated, but with a good manual I am sure I can do it. So here are my questions:
1. Is there a good manual someone could recommend ? (this is a LS1 4L60E)
2. Are there any special setup instructions/measurements specific to LS1s ? (Pro Built I know you have mentioned something along these lines)
3. Will a TCI rebuild kit, Z-pak 3-4 clutches and shift kit be enough ?
4. Where can I obtain the modified "Shift Kit" for the LS1 4L60Es ? (another question for Pro Built)
5. Any common snags that first time builders usually run into ?
Thanks in advance
John

John, stop by and pick up my GM service manual, it it shows it all. You will not go wrong with it.
Oh yeah, and go vacuum modulated for your shifts, it will last longer and shift much more quickly.

Trent thanks for the reply. I have the service manual (thank god) for the car. Just thought maybe there was a step by step rebuild book for rookies. BTW the tranny works good, but doesnt like the 2-3 shift/3rd gear....lol Already knew that though. Other than that it works like a champ. John I will give you a call price is everything.
Thanks guys for the responses

TRYMYZ, here goes.
1. Is there a good manual someone could recommend? (this is a LS1 4L60E) Yes, the ATSG build & update books are good.
2. Are there any special setup instructions/measurements specific to LS1s? Just the "modified" Trans-Go Performance Shift kit instructions, otherwise the same as the regular 4L60E.
3. Will a TCI rebuild kit, Z-pak 3-4 clutches and shift kit be enough? Use the Borg Warner Hi-Energy 8-clutch 3-4 setup.
4. Where can I obtain the modified "Shift Kit" for the LS1 4L60E's? At www.700r4l60e.com
5. Any common snags that first time builders usually run into? Have someone who is familiar with these units help you out on this. This will make things go a little smoother.

Thanks for the responses guys, especially Dana from Pro Built Automatics. He spent a good 30 + minutes of his time answering all my questions and giving me advice. I am going to make this a long term project so I can take my time and do it right. Anyone who has ever worked on cars with me (WILWAXU) knows how meticulous I am. Thanks again guys.
John
BTW Does anyone have the specs on how the clutches should be setup for performance ?

It uses 6 discs and has more friction surface than the typical 9 disc set up right? Do you have a link to it?
