Default Which Yank covertor is for me???

My mods are below. I plan on gettinga cam in the future. I was looking for something around a 3000 stall. I would also like a YANK. Thanks in advance!

ST3500!!!

I've been extremely pleased with mine! Only drawback being that I roasted my set of gears which took just about everything with it and it conveniently happened at the drag strip 150 miles from home. Instead of rebuilding the 10 bolt I went to a 12 bolt which I'm waiting on now.

Other than that I've got nothing but love for the ST3500. Being that you've got a 98 you shouldn't even have to worry about the problems you've been hearing about them - they only seem to occur on the 01/02 model years.

My ST3500 shaved roughly .8 off my 1/4 mile ET!!!

What are your goals, looseness tolerance, and what gears and tires do you have?

my favorites are: TT3000 (2.73 gears) and the SY 3500 & ST 3500 for 3.23 and 3.73 cars.

Pro Yank 3400 Extreme will feel as tight as most 3000 stall converters but will give you the added performance where you need it.

The SLP 3300 (made by Yank) is also excellent. It is basically a lower stall version of the Super Thruster 3500. Very, very good choice.

I really like the SY3500 for mainly street only cars with 3.23s or bigger. I know some bash it’s low STR, but I’ve had great luck with it (track and street), and launching is pretty easy on any type of street tires.

HMMM...okay, I might be chagnging my mind then, you are right, I only want to do this once, hehe! What about my rearend though? I do not want the same thing happening to me. The guys who installed my gears left way too much backlash, so my rearend might not hold, what do you think? I checked the rear a little while ago and the bearings and everything where fine and the gears did not look that bad and were not missing teeth or anything, hehe.

So it looks like the SY3500 is what should go with, right? What about that Pro Yanks 3400 that was mentioned above?

Automatics as a general rule are much kinder to rear ends than stick shift cars. Tires (traction) play a huge role in the life of your rear end. No 3500 stall converter is going to ruin a rear end unless you're making some SERIOUS torque and have some MAJOR traction. So unless you plan on racing a lot at a well-prepped track with slicks and a big shot of nitrous, your rear-end should last a long time on the street.

A Super Yank 3500 is going to feel much looser than a Super Thruster 3500 even though they stall the same. Same thing goes for a Pro Yank 3400 Extreme. It's going to feel tighter than the Super Thruster 3500 and about as tight as a Yank 3000, but perform much better. I really, really like the Pro Yank 3400 Extreme...it's the perfect converter for those who want a big performance increase without the looseness headaches.

Yep, what Patrick said... many A4 cars in the 10's with a stock rear. They are ALOT easier on the rear than a 6 speed.

I went for 12 bolt for two reasons. This is my only car, and I race ALOT. Figured if I was upgrading to 3.73's, might as well step up.

Hey Ameet, this is Dan (AKA GR8WHITE). If you want to see how a PY3400E feels, give me a call and we'll hook up. I must agree with patrik as well, I like my 3400E even better than the ST3500 (which I loved), and feels much tighter to me. It'll feel even tighter on your car with those 3.73 gears.

"I almost never go to the track" You better take that "almost" out of that statement

Even though the PY3400E is a nitrous converter, it has all the attribute you're looking for on motor.

Default Re: Which Yank covertor is for me???

When I was shopping for my converter, someone gave me some very good advice (can't remember who, or I'd give them props).

It was...

Whatever converter you decide on, go one step higher

Words to live by my friend, that was some of the best advice I've gotten. I was sold on the SY3500 until I heard that...

1) It wouldn't be quite as fast at the track
2) Costs $200 more

So I said screw it and went with the ST3500 for that reason. As for rear ends... I am one of those oddball cases but just so you know it DOES happen. I blew my rear end out racing a couple weeks ago and my daily driver is currently immobile in the garage waiting on a 12 bolt to arrive and be installed. I didn't even make it to the 11's before this happened. Don't want to scare you but be aware of all possibilities! It is really really really rare for anyone running slower than an 11 second ET to do this, especially an A4 car.

For those wondering - it made a total of 13 passes on the YANK with almost no traction issues (until the diffy started going and traction became poorer) on BFG DR's. Then I roasted the ring and pinion, differential, and pretty much anything else that can be ruined save the axles.

Okay, thanks for the info guys. I do not know if it is just me, but I think 3500 is too high for me. I know a LOT of people have it, but it just seems too high for me. I had my heart set on a 300 stall but it seems people only suggest that convertor with 2.72 gears. I defenitely do not want my gears getting roasted. I almost never go to the track. Any more info, thanks for alll the help!

Listen to what these people are saying. They don't want you to regret your decision later. So many people started with lower stall converters only to find out they were a lot tamer than they were expecting. Have you driven an LS1 with a converter? If not, then trust the judgement of those who have.

My first LS1 converter was a Yank 3000....great converter, but I eventually wanted more...you will too. Trust me, a ST3500 converter is a lot tamer than you might think.
