Default gears or stall

I was wondering which I should do first, gears or a stall. I have a 02 A4 with 2.73's. I thinking about going to 3.73's or a 3200 stall. Does it matter which one i do first. Also on the gears, anybody point me in a direction to buy some, and what is a reasonable price for the install of gears and a stall?

thanks.

I can help you out on the 3.73's & torque converter, but I would go with the torque converter first, as I have seen more improvement from the TC change than the gear ratio change. The rearend gear change will help also, but not to the degree of the stall change.

thanks for your response. I would like to keep decent gas mileage, with that in mind would you go with a 3200 or a 3600? What kind of prices am I looking at? brand name?

Depending on how you drive, will have more to do with gas mileage, than the torque converter. What has been done to this motor? Is this a daily driver?, or weekend warrior? The TC I would recommend is the Edge, they sell for $555.00, or the Vigilante, they sell for $719.00. Both have a good reputation. With the above information & more, will determine the stall of the TC. Let me know?

Definately TC then Gears just as stated above.

I dropped in my 3200 Level 1 TC (Vigilante) a few months ago, and today get it back with my 3.42's in it.

(Learn from my mistake, if you are doing a gear swap, your 2.73 rear end is a series 2 carrier so you will need an X gear set or swap complete rear ends.)

Mods done to the car are, MTI lid & filter, ported TB, flowtech LTs with flowtech y-pipe (no cats), and a corsa catback, msd wires, and brisk sp's. And I figured the next thing to do was the stall. It is a daily driver, and its a 02 with 20k miles on it. what is the difference between the TCI and the TC Vig?

Do a stall 3,200 on up PLUS a trans cooler and a trans-go shift kit.

A vig 2800, Yank SS3600 or TCI 3300 will all have your car flying and be very street friendly.

Once you do the stall, the need for a gear change may disappear. For stop light racing on street tires, 2.73s with a stall can be very effective. 3.73s will require good rubber and decent skill to launch.

Depends on the STR, I CANNOT WOT from a stop on the stall without a set of DRs.

CONVERTER FIRST. With cooler, temp gauge and probably a shift kit. Other good things at this time are subframe connectors and drag radials.

I'm going to represent the loyal opposition here. Everyone always says, "converter first," but the question is, "what are you trying to do with your car?" What are your goals? If it's to go as fast as possible at WOT, I'd agree - do the converter first. If you're trying to improve driveability in town, then it's a different story.

For drivabilty in town, I'd still do a small converter (~3000) first. It gets rid of the horrible sluggishness at part throttle. Next, I would suggest raising your low TPS part throttle shift points. This will tighten the feel of the converter and make the car much more responsive. Doing this would allow you to keep the 2.73's low highway rpms and its killer 2nd gear and your car will feel and be much faster.

Just amke sure you have something like a 2.5 STR and your car will be fine. I have two buddies with the same exact cars, same mods, same stall size. One has 2.73's and the other has 3.73's. The car with the 2 series has a much bigger STR so I guess that makes up for it. Both pulled the same 60's and same et!

Make sure you have tires for the higher STR. And yes it gets rid of the sluggishness at part throttle, the car jumps forward when I just tap the pedal, that's great.

I am sorry, but what does STR stand for?
