Default TH400 guys inside

got a weird one for ya....

today was the first time i have turned on my defrost since installing the A3 trans....

some things happen right away that grabs i attention....

for starters the idle gets much more stable(already got an answer on that , thanks chad)

second, the converter...... it grabs about 1000 rpm sooner

i have a hughes 4000 stall, and normally it does not move the car foward until it reaches about 3000 rpms....

but after turning on the defrost it grabs at 2000..... WTF?

not believing it myself, i turned off the defrost and right away it acts normal.... slipping to 3000 before grabbing... turned it back on and back to 2000.....

the th400 is not electronically controlled, i have no lockup at all, so what gives? i dont see what would cause the connection in the 2?

a side note, my compresser does not have a belt on it so it never pulls power from the motor when i turn on the defrost...

Whats the deal?

No kidding!

I'm about to put a Hughes 4000 in with the TH400. Sure would be nice to turn the rear defroster on and lower the stall rpm for around town driving.

not the rear defrost... the front one, that usually kicks on your compresser(well it would but mine is not hooked up..)
i know it gets its tuning from a differant table when it thinks you are running the compresser, but i dont see how it would effect stall speed?

unless it somehow increases tranny fluid pressure?

I understand what you are saying. Without the compressor hooked up, I don't understand how it could put any load on the motor to cause such a condition. I don't think line pressure could be increased if it is not an electronicaly controlled transmission.

This may remain somewhat of a mystery, but here's a TTT for you. Hopefully someone might be able to chime in.

lol that would be a good trick

does it idle differently? maybe you a/c on idle speed is set different.

Also I can't immagine how the car won't move at all untill 3k rpm? I rode in a ls/th350 4900 rpm stalled car and untill you get on it its not much different than mine. can drive under 2k rpm at light throttle.

maybe i worded that wronge... it will "move" under 3k rpm... but it is not till 3 k that there is good throttle feel.... but with defrost on there is good throttle feel at 2000 rpm... it also cruised at lower rpm.....

oh and get this... even though it cruised at a lower rpm... i got WORSE gas milage!!! what gives????
i swere i only get the REALLY strange probles....

Default ????

do you have a vac. modulator on the tranny?
if so the drop in vac. will make the stall and tranny act different... you may want to install a vac. reserve tank to help ypu out.

Manual valve body shouldnt be vac operated then.

Thats on freaky trans/converter you have, I'd be calling Hughes or Ghost Busters.
