Default adding gears to a th400?

Ive been told you can add up to 2 gears to a th400. I know you can add 1 extra gear for an OD. But is it possible to add 2 and have a 5 speed auto th400? That sounds like a dream to me.

what about a 5th gear though? That would require 2 ODs.

Gear Vendors cuts all your gears in half, so you would actually have 6 gears. Goto their website. There was a guy here that had it in like a 70 Nova, it was badass, but I think it north of $2000. Hope that helps. Tim.

Are you serious! You can make a 6 speed auto out of a th400! Thats awesome. Why cant it be done to the 4l60e? Everybodies been telling me to dump the 4l60e if i wanna make 900hp. Thats what i want at the flywheel and 800hp at the wheels. Can the 4l60e not be built to take this pressure?

At that power level, don't waste your time with a 4L60. Unless you like banging your head against the wall. From what I have heard, the GVOD does not work well in a drag race type of situation. Something about the shifts not being very consistant. Could make it nicer on the highway.

how much do you guys think the 4l60e CAN handle? Im not too crazy about swapping out the tranny. I might just have to go with whatever it can handle. So how much you guys think?

Probably about the power you're making now, maybe a little more, maybe a little less.

The 60E isn't exactly known for being bulletproof. My personal take is that anything over about 450 hp is a crapshoot. And the more power, the worse the odds of it living. And more weight and traction also make the odds of blowing it up worse. Sadly, its more like playing roulette in Vegas than I think anybody would like.

You've got to define what your idea of "handling" is.....Are 1 or 2 rebuilds a year acceptable? Or does it have to be absolutely bulletproof for 3 years or 5 years or....

Once you figure out what your idea of "handling" looks like, then you can talk to a couple of good builders and they can give you a good idea of what kind of power it will stand up to, and how much that built tranny (and torque convertor) will cost.

Just my $.02

The GVOD says that it can handle 1200hp, now I dont know if your trans can hold that. And the cool thing about the GVOD is that you can just use that regular 3 gears in the TH350/400, then hit a switch and you have your 3 extras. Also, you can make a 8 speed auto out of the 4l60, if anyone cares. Tim.

The GVOD is just another planetary gearset, just like an automatic transmission has. Whoever you heard that from is on crack. besides, how often are you going to drag race in overdrive
