I will find out soon, I hope mine doesn't react if I put it into first on the highway.....

That would take care of all my worries....

OHH OHH ME ME ME I KNOW.....Well I know that MY TH400 doesn't dont know if all do or not. Hey how much did you pay for your planetaries that you swapped out. I got a 2.75 first gear in mine and it cost me 480.....left second alone though. My tranny with reverse valvebody, t-brake, and the 2.75 first was 1450. I'm going to call my tranny guy tomorrow and ask him about the engine braking thing if nobody has answered by then. Hey Chewbaca I could be persuaded to make you a automatic OD controller if the money is right

Well I've discovered it. It all depends on the tranny you get check out this link. Alot of them are available with full engine braking, engine braking in 3rd only, and the TH350's also come in different options. Guess it all depends on how the tranny was built. Personally i LIKE not having engine braking in 1st and second. I can downshift to second at around 45 mph and just floor it without worrying about the RPM's coming up abruptly when i put it into second...it's really killer. You can downshift and the car next to you you might be racing wont even know

Hang on, lemme clarify!

Mine has engine braking in 3rd (as in, I let off at the finish line and it has some serious braking from there on down so long as I leave it in 3rd.) BUT, I can throw it into 2nd from 3rd at 7000 rpm if I want to and nothing bad will happen. It's like I pushed the clutch in. I'm VERY glad it's built this way to say the least!

Thats good to hear....I think the 350's have a different setup compared to the th400's, or each their own, I guess it all depends

ok let me try to explain here...

with a reverse manual valvebody there is NO engine braking in:

first gear
second gear

and there IS braking from third gear

Whether you have engine braking depends on really one 1 thing:

the valvebody

I can tell you if you have a trans-brake, you have no engine braking in first or second...

but if you dont there *might* be a valvebody built to have engine braking in first and second that is a "manual" vavlebody but that design would be a "foward pattern". i dont know of a reverse manual valvebody, with or w/o brake, that has engine braking in first or second gear

It has to be how they're built. Our '79 vette (stock TH350) has engine braking in all three gears and so does our '84 olds (stock TH350C).

BTW, mine is a reverse pattern manual valvebody with a transbrake.

like i said, it isn't the transmission itself.

its in the VALVEBODY

you have stock unmodified valvebodies, you SHOULD have engine braking in all gears

It's the resistance (mainly from the compression of the engine) the engine gives when the throttle is shut that helps in slowing the car down...such as when you let off the gas and coast in a manual car. Push the clutch in and you lose that "engine braking." With some automatic transmissions it's as if you pushed the clutch in when you let off the gas in certain gears. The rpms fall to idle instead of falling slowly as the speed of the car falls.
