Do TH350/400's have engine braking?
That would take care of all my worries....

Mine has engine braking in 3rd (as in, I let off at the finish line and it has some serious braking from there on down so long as I leave it in 3rd.) BUT, I can throw it into 2nd from 3rd at 7000 rpm if I want to and nothing bad will happen. It's like I pushed the clutch in. I'm VERY glad it's built this way to say the least!
with a reverse manual valvebody there is NO engine braking in:
first gear
second gear
and there IS braking from third gear
Whether you have engine braking depends on really one 1 thing:
the valvebody
I can tell you if you have a trans-brake, you have no engine braking in first or second...
but if you dont there *might* be a valvebody built to have engine braking in first and second that is a "manual" vavlebody but that design would be a "foward pattern". i dont know of a reverse manual valvebody, with or w/o brake, that has engine braking in first or second gear
It has to be how they're built. Our '79 vette (stock TH350) has engine braking in all three gears and so does our '84 olds (stock TH350C).

like i said, it isn't the transmission itself.
its in the VALVEBODY
you have stock unmodified valvebodies, you SHOULD have engine braking in all gears
