Crawl under the car and take a look at the bracket that holds the shift cable, and see if it came loose. Also see if the cable itself is loose (either at the bracket, or adjustment sleeve).

everything looked in place down there. Could the shifter be causing this because it definitely feels off, but under the console everything also looks in place .

?? that's odd. i'm no transmission expert, but it sounds like a linkage issue. what else could it be?

The clip that holds the shift cable in the bracket has poped off. It will look like its in place but when you shift it will come out of the bracket. Turn just your key on dont crank the car and pull the shifter down into gear and then look at it, it will be out of the bracket. A hose clamp works just fine, I've got one on my car right now.

Your shifter cable has a bracket it slips into, there is a half moon shaped clip that keeps it in that bracket. When it pops off and you go from park to drive and then back to park it comes out of the bracket and throws off your shifter. Pull your cars shifter all the way down to what should be 1st and look under your car and the shift cable will be out of the bracket. Grab the arm the the cable is attached to on your trans. and manually push it back to park. Then your cable will be back in the bracket and you can put just a hose clamp on it(back side of bracket) to keep it in the bracket until you order that clip from GM. (2.00).
