Default shift problems

I have a 98, headers, stall, intake and cam, car that I have had tranny problems out of for a while now and I just rebuilt the trans. and had it re-tuned. My car is now shifting and running good only if I manual shift it. If I leave it in D and let them computer do it the 1-2 shifts fine but the 2-3 flashes like its in neutral and thats under regular driving or WOT. Like I said, it will shift manually but if I let it mess up in Drive it will seem to knock out 3 and 4th gears, I will only have 1st and 2nd until I stop and turn the car off and it cools off and they will just come back and sometimes they will come back while driving. I changed the VSS and the fluid and also changed the cooler but no luck. Also it doesn't throw any codes. Thanks in advance.

Sorry to hear bout the probs. Did you built it urself? or was it a shop. I was just askin incase you had a warranty. Some possibilities are,(1)stuck/sticking valve (2)crossleaks between seals (3)shift sol/sol o-ring. W/out any codes it'll be hard to diag, you may need to drive it more to generate a DTC.

I had a shop do it and he has been backing it up, this is the second time, each time he doesn't find anything. I'm about to drop it off to him again but its just odd that the 3-4 will go away and then come back. That just doesn't happen, usually its either gone or its there. Thanks for the input.

Was this one of the orig probs w/ the trans and the reason you had it built? If this is now the third time with the same prob. he's missing something. That going away and coming back thing makes me think a bore is worn in the vb and a valve is hangin up on SOME of the shift cycles.

I already had one of his trans. in my car for about 8 months and it was great but I had a cam put in my car and the car still ran fine then I sent the pcm off to be tuned and when I got it back my car wouldn't shift and then I lost 3-4 clutches right off the bat. So we thought it was the tuning. I swapped tuners and rebuilt the transmission and the same results, so again I swapped tuners and rebuilt the transmission and I picked the car up on thursday and while the tuner was working with the fuel tables we noticed the car still wouldn't shift and eventually lost 3-4 gears but now they come back. I dont know which way to go now. The trans. guy put a snap-on scanner and it shows the car going to 3rd and fourth put the car never leaves 2nd. Thanks again.

There is a solonoid in the tranny that causes real funny things to happen. I think its called the EPC? I had my tranny rebuilt and it wasn't replaced, later the 3, 4 clutches burned up and th converter wouldn't lock up properly. I took it back under warrenty and they rebuilt it again this time replacing that solonoid. Everything seems to be fine so far. I hope this helps.
