Curious about dyno numbers and different converter?

Default Curious about dyno numbers and different converter?

If I dyno with a stock verter and make 400RWHP/370RWTQ unlocked.

Then I dyno w/say a VIG 3600 unlocked how will the Dyno numbers compare?More or less power/
This is strickly unlocked info I'm looking for.

Someone did this not that long ago. The torque numbers with the convertor were crazy high, but the HP was down compared to the stock convertor....

JS,

The unlocked numbers will be quite a bit lower on the Vig 3600 vs. the stock converter, but it's not just an efficiency thing. See, a high stall converter like a Vig 3600 is going to instantly get the motor into its powerband very quickly, thus making the dyno run much shorter. This will skew the dyno results lower just like running a car with 4.10 gears vs. 3.23 gears on the chassis dyno will.

Sure the Vig is going to be less efficient than the stock converter: its smaller size and larger clearances will not give it the holding capacity of the larger stock converter. On the other hand, the Vig 3600 is going to be about 20 lbs lighter, which will help acceleration on the chassis dyno (and the track) which will help make up some of this horsepower. The unlocked Vig will be down about 15-20 rwhp unlocked vs. the stock converter. Locked, the Vig 3600 will be about 10 rwhp better because of its lighter weight.

Okay Patrick I understand,So if I dynoed 400RWHP unlocked w/the stocker then put the VIG in it'll drop down to 380RWHP,Correct?

Not to mention adding 3.73's to the mix is gonna drop it another 3 or 4 RWHP over 3.23's?

20 rwhp loss wouldn't surprise me JS, especially if you're adding gears too. Funny thing is, this is mostly a dyno phenomenon. You won't see a drop in mph at the track...rather a gain! Converters are weird that way. Just look at Raughammer running 125 mph with only 390 rwhp (unlocked YTP4400).

JS don't forget that things like tuning, ud pulley, ported TB, and other small mods are going to bring that number back up again.

So is the efficiency of the TC measured by comparing dyno numbers between the stock converter and whichever after market TC you're going with? I know PI's are said to be less efficient but I don't understand exactly how it's measured.
