Default Shift Kit Reviews

Just gathering opinions from those wiser than myself on what I should do about a shift kit. Thinking about getting one to preserve my trans. Never been to the track, but lets face it, i tend to drive it like its stolen once in awhile.

I get a little nervous every time i go WOT. It feels like my shifts are taking too long. Once the car does shift it really hits, but it seems like its taking too long, don't want to burn up the clutch packs.

Heres the Car
I have an '02 SS 35thLE.
16,000 miles.
QTP 1 3/4 LTs, Magnaflow bullet cats, Magnaflow catback
K&N FIPK
Speed Inc. Tune
Dynoed 347 RWHP/365 ft/lbsTQ at speed inc.

Not planning on doing much else in terms of power mods. Looking more toward chassis/susp. right now. I'd like to keep the car as stock as possible b/c of the LE aspect. Also leaning against a stall since i'd like to keep street tires. If a shift kit is going to be beneficial for the car in the long run i'm willing to do it.

Those with shift kits let me know what kit you have and what setup you had put in (spacers etc.). What effect did it have? How much should i budget for the install? Is a tranny cooler worth it to do at the same time, and how much for that?

Thanks for your help!

Love my Transgo. Installing an aftermarket converter tends to soften up the shifts - sometimes making them almost imperceptible. The Transgo restores good shift feel, enlarging the separator plate holes insures good fluid feed to the clutch packs, the revised TCC valve improves lock-up, etc. I run one spacer and the install cost me $150 with the tranny out of the car.

Here's a write-up I had on my old TA with a shift kit, https://ls1tech.com/forums/automatic-transmission/510055-transgo-b-m-shift-kit.html, post #6. I would probably say that the Transgo kits are the most poplular for the 4L60E, I just went with the B&M because I had a good friend that worked at Autozone that got it for me cheap. I've heard a lot of good about the Transgo kits though. I would definately do a nice tranny cooler too, don't want that tranny to overheat.

I've used B&M kits in other transmissions, about the closest being a 700R4. The B&M does what it advertises, but it is really harsh. The same goes for a Fairbanks kit I installed in a Ford C4. A while ago I drove an AOD Mustang with a Bauman kit, and it was very nice.

Base on my experiences, I would stay away from B&M. I think time and technology have passed them by. I hope to have the Transgo experience with my 4L60E soon, and it should be better than what I'm used to.

Since Im about to get a stall do you guys think its worth it to spend an extra hundred bucks or so and get a Trans Go kit. Can some1 explain to me do you push a button to shift or do you just let the kit do the shifting I? I have never really considered a shift kit before till I hear it helps the life of ur trans.

Yes I would recommend the kit. Also it does not change the way you operate the car.

if you think your shifts are loose now, wait til the stall. it'll turn the shifts into mush. a shift kit is a must after a stall if you ask me.

I got mine here from Pro Built Automatics and I run 1 washer and it workes great!!! At part throttle you can barely even tell it's in there and at WOT if firms up nicely not harsh at all. I paid $93 for the kit and $75 for the install, so far it was the best money i've spent on the car.
