I wouldn't buy anything from slp.....buying a bottle of water would turn into a hassle with those guys. I got slp headers but they came used from a guy local. I will admit they are exceptional quality

As far as streetability goes.....we have different views on that. To me my 4400 isn't that big of a deal. Its not up to you to decide whats streetable.

As far as best deal for the money goes...again we see different. If i can gain a few tenths by paying several hundred more $$$'s for a converter then by golly I'll do it in a second.

Exactly how long has tci been making and testing converters for the ls1?? Check out yanks sight sometime. They have everything tested and documented. I don't think I've seen any testing of the tci converters Please post some track times or any other info ya got. I would rally like to see it....not being sarcastic...I REALLY would like to see how they perform.

I'm not pro yank....I'm pro whatever performs. I used to run a vig2800 and still believe it is the best available if you want something 3k or below.

I got some buddies raggin me cause I'm not 60ft'n very well since the verter swap. What they don't realize is that I'm running 3 tenths faster than the vig with the same 60ft. I can't hook or it's really be a big difference.

Just as a few hundredths at the track are important to some, reliabilty is important to me.
I want three things-
1. No damage or reason my warranty would be voided due to a TC.
2. No SES light.
3. Whip 99% of the cars at red lights with my TC.
My car might see the track once while I own it. It is far more important to have an excellent daily driver with an unfair advantage.

I know people who have grenaded TCI converters, but I know that they are popular choices with guys running the older Detroit iron.

I'd be curious to see how their stuff works. A 10" converter seems to work well in the 3000 - 3500 range, but in the 4000 stall and higher range, seems like a smaller diameter is a more natural choice.

Has anyone running the TCI converter dynoed locked and unlocked? That would be a starting point for a comparsion.

Kevin, Will the Super Street fighter for the LS1s handle nitrous okay? I don't want to spend $500 and then tourn around and wich I had gotten a PYE.

Chris,
I've put a 200 shot on my Super Street Fighter with no problems. As far as strength, I'll put our TCI converters up against anyones. We are now building some 4000-4200 stall Competition series converters to compete against the other guys. Part number 242933. Like the Street Fighter and the Super Street Fighter it's also built out of the 245mm 9.5" core.

If TCI wants to have one tried out, give me a holla.

I put down 450rwhp unlocked with my Yank TP3600E.

I need to go to a 4200-4400 stall.

I'll dyno the TCI locked and unlocked.

You can use Edit to hold the car in 3rd gear at WOT starting at maybe 10 mph so you could get a nice measurement of the unlocked torque curve compared with locked. It would also give you a pretty close read on the stall speed.

I think everyone wants to know how these converters perform, but IMO it is stupid to think that a manufacture would test their product publicly.

Its easy to say "I'll put it against any out there", but hard to do it.

Independent testing would be a different story.

I would like to see some independent testing of some other converters out there, but the stories I've heard haven't been good. Kevin, I don't know if it was you that contacted me about TCI's converters a while back, but I told whomever e-mailed me from TCI that I knew of someone with a '02 T/A that would try a TCI. Her Yank ST3500 had taken a dump, and she was needing something else. She tried it, and 100 miles later the converter grenaded. I've heard quite a few stories similar to this, so that's why I'd be VERY apprehensive to try one out. It apparently seems to be working well for some out there, though. I'd like to see a test of the ST3500 vs. Vig 3200 vs. TCI 3500. Then a PT4400 vs. Vig 3600 vs. TCI 4200-4400 would be awesome. A guy can dream can't he?

I have a lockup switch on my car too, and access to a TechII.

Hi Trevor,
I'm not sure if you're talking about Kristi and her boyfriend John, but if you are, you are mistaken about the events that transpired. They helped us do some testing with several different lockup materials last years. None of the converters "grenaded", but the first one that we sent Kristi did develop the chatter problem similar to what she experienced with the Yank. AFAIK, the second is still trouble-free. Kristi, if you're out there, please give us an update on your hot rod. Her boyfriend John also has one of our converters in his LS1 car. He's pretty happy with his. As far as problems with our production models we haven't had any that were "grenaded", however we have two returns out of approx. 250 production converters. Both of them had the same problem. We had not machined the turbine thrust washer large enough to accept the input shaft. That prevented the converter from being installed on the trans. We now have one additional checklist item because of those returns!
Take Care,
Kevin

Well, hopefully mine will go through the new checklist. I decided to go ahead and get the Super Street Fighter for my Z. We'll see how it does at the track, it should be here in a couple of weeks.

Just stumbled over this post during a search.
I have been testing the TCI converters for over a year now. I had the Super Street Fighter 3500 which took a half second off of my 1/8 times with a 1.7 60. the converter I have now is 3800 with a 2.5 str and I average low 1.6 60 ft times with it and have knocked off almost two tenths more off of my ET. I would reccommend these converters to anyone who is looking for a good upgrade at a low cost.

Kevin Winstead, I just looked at the TCI web site and I don't see anywhere where you list the STR or efficiency of any of your converters. I would like to compare them with the other brands that do list those specs. Care to post them here?

The STR of our StreetFighter 3000 stall converter is a little over 2:1. The Super Street Fighter (3500 stall) is 2.5:1. The new Competition converter (4200 stall) has a little over 2.7:1 as measured on our converter dyno. As with all other converters the slippage increases as the stall speed increases. You'll find that the higher stall speed converters will have the lowest efficiency numbers. I run the Super Street Fighter in my daily driver. It typically runs high 11s at 113 mph and is very streetable.
Take Care,
Kevin

2 tenths is huge, that could be the difference between a 12 second pass vs an 11 second pass, or if you arent there yet, a 13 second pass vs a 12 second pass. again go with whats proven and leads the market.

Kevin, sorry for the delayed support I just saw this thread. I ran the TCI 3000 and 3500 converter with no prob at all with it pulling 1.60's on nittos, which is the same as Kristi's Yank when it was working, now we have a 4400 going in tonight so we will see what happens, as far as the TCI being junk I have about 10,000 miles on my current converter in 2 different cars and it is working fine we had some chatter issues to start with and they took care of them no ? asked, Kristi had a yank had problems with the clutch they told her sorry about your luck have a nice day.TCI has great customer service and as far as I have seen a great converter.

We will keep an update on the 4400
