Default What do you think about TCI converters?

Some shop here (X2C motorsports) said they can get me a 3000-3100 stall TCI converter for $425. Is it worth it? Just want to get some finaly opinions. I looked it up and it had some pretty positive opinions ,and with that price it will allow me to sepnd some more on my NOS set-up. Thanks.

I do not recommend any converter but the Yank or Vigilantes. I've yet to see any other brand perform as well, and I highly recommend that you stick with what is proven.

Yip. Stick with Yank or Vig. Only proven converters.

I think you'll have a hard time beating the performance of the new TCI #242932, 3500 stall converter. I'm happy with mine, but then again I'm biased

Have you guys ever tried a TCI in a LS1?
Do you know anyone who has?

I got a Streetfighter from JEGs and it dropped me 4 tenths and raised me 1 MPH.

I really like it.

I switched to a PI 3200 because I dont know if TCI makes a bigger stall. If they did I would get one.

Harold, I thought you would be more open-minded.

Well Andy's Auto can get me a Vigilante for $700 shipped ,thats a real good deal. TCI is a good deal ,but the thing is the results I see are .4 or .3 gain ,but with the vigilante I see .5-.8 gains. Also since Im also getting nitrous ,I know that the VIG can handle that as well.

Terry makes a fine converter, you couldn't go wrong with one of his.
As far as typically gains with the TCI converters, you're right 4 tenths is common for the 3000 stall Streetfighter 242931.
7 tenths is about right for the 3500 stall Super Streetfighter 242932. That's probably the one that you'd want.
Later,
Kevin

Thanks Kevin ,the 3500stall ,will it affect my daily driving much. Im more into the driveability than the E/T gains.

I'd recommend that you drive someone's car that has a high stall converter in order to see how you like it. The 3000 stall speed is definitely more driveable than the 3500, but once you become use to the 3500, I'd bet you wouldn't want to go back. The 3500 actually flashes a little higher than 3500, just like the Vig 3200. Neither should have any effect on your highway economy because of the lockup feature.

FWIW, I wouldn't buy from TCI. Sure years ago they were the ****, but since they got bought out, The quality sucks.

TIM98TA,
I'm the Product Engineer here at TCI that designs all of the converters. Actually I put the LS1 trans. and converter in my car so we could design the fastest LS1 converters on the market. I'm not here to bash PI or Yank converters. Heck, I've talked to Terry H. and asked him his opinion on a converter design on a couple of occasions. We've spent many hours on our converter dyno, trying to optimize efficiency and STR.
It's true that Federal Mogul bought us several years ago, but that all changed last year when they went bankrupt. Comp Cams is our new owner. The quality of our converters has never been better. We have the lowest rate of return ever.

Hmmm, maybe we need to get a test car. Install a PI3200, a Yank 3500, and a TCI 3500 and see what happens...

Take Care,
Kevin

That's good to know about TCI. They were the **** when I ran S/G years ago. We ran a TCI glide, valve body, trans brake, convertor, scatter blanket. It was all behibd a 500ci BBC in a full fiberglass 55 Chevy.
If you want a test mule, I am in the process of changing my drive train to a TH350 or TH400 from my 4l60e. Wanna build me a setup to try?

Okay ,Im am really thinking about getting the TCI ,because then Ill have some more money left for the nitrous. For the TCI 3500 guys ,how is the 3500stall on daily driving and gas mileage? Since I was thinking about getting the Vig 3200 which actually stalls at 3500 ,I think Ill be fine with the TCI 3500. I really dont want to change the driveability and the gas mileage. Is a lock up converter?
