Question What MPH should 3rd gear take me to?

I was out for alittle cruise tonite and I decided to get on it on a straight smooth highway where theres no cops. 3rd is only taking me to about 110mph or so, after that is OD. shouldnt it go higher. I didnt think that the stall and 3.73's would kill my top end like that. whats gonna happen when install some juice. N/A I went 108 in hot weather. I dont want the car to go into OD at the track when I start sraying how much will going to a slightly taller tire help?

i have a 4k stall, 373s, and stock rims/tires. with that combo i can run 114-115 mph at the rev limiter in 3rd.

edit: rev limiter being 6,200

is it the stall or the STR that affects top speed? I was under the asumption it was only STR.

Neither, its a product of power at the wheels, weight of the car, and gear ratios mainly...other things are frictional/gravitational forces, and drag coefficient...

You could increase the shift point and rev limiter. Going with 28" tires would give around 8 mph.

Stock converter with 3.23 spraying a 125 shot I go through the traps @ 116 and not hitting the rev limiter.

i have 373's with a 30 high tire (lower profile than stock) and it shifts out of 3 at around 110 at about 6200rpm. i had to go lower profile because of the with of the tires.

315/35/17 (in your sig) is the same height as stock...within .1".

I can't tell you exactly where but I know with my 3.23's and vig3200 it's just over 120 with a 6500rpm redline. i had thought about a lockup switch for a while to extend it a bit because of PI being notorious for inefficiency but they add a lot of stress to the tranny i heard.

with stock 3.23s with stock converter in my 99 z28, 3rd gear would hold til 140 mph. That's if you had it in 3rd, not OD, in OD it'll shift out at about 130.
with 4.10s with the stock and tci 3500, it'll shift out of 3rd at 110. at 145mph im at about 5600rpms in 4th.

As far as I know there are no "stock 3.23's" unless you had an SS or WS6 car. You should have 2.73's on your Z28. Check your door sticker, should say GU3. GU5 was 3.23.

Also there is no way a 3.23 gear will run you that high. My car is also a stock 3.23 car and it will want to go into OD around 120.

3.23 were a performance option for Z28, T/A, and Firebirds. Standard on SS and WS6.

Mines not a WS6 car, and it came from factory with 3.23s. Some T/A's(non WS6's) came with them, not just the SS and WS6. Also, mine goes into OD around 130-135 shifting at 6100rpms, 6300 rev limit. So it could easily go that high.

lol...ok. I'll put the gears back in and tape my 140 run. Only reason I know it was 140 is because it was in 3rd and banged the rev limiter at 140, and that's when i let off and looked down to see what i did. And how many posts does it take to let poeple know what gears come in what cars? and that was stock tune also, only had the airlid on when i did that.

Well that's strange because mine will shift almost 20mph sooner than that, with stock shift points.
