I don't think that it's inferior. I use it personally, and I sell it to my commercial customers also, who use it without issue.

I work at Advance Auto - when we recieve shipments, it all comes at once, from all different brands. We recieved one shipment of Advance Auto brand ATF, along with Valvoline ATF. A customer bought the Advance Auto brand, opened it up, and it was clear fluid with a gooey/sticky consistancy. It also smelled terrible, not anything like ATF THe Valvoline brand was fine, no issues at all.
I work for Advance also, and remember that particular batch. I seem to recall that they called back that batch to fix the issue, and also issued a memo saying that the fluid was fine, it just didn't get all of the color that it needed.

I can go on and on with examples of the store brand being inferior, believe what you want, but my opinion is a good 80% of it is garbage.
Buy what you want. I can't stop you. Store brand is usually made by a name brand manufacturer and is EXACTLY the same thing, just without all the advertising support or manufacturer's label. That's the way it is across the board.

Personally I've never had a problem buying stuff that's store brand, regardless of which store it comes from. I don't need a brand-name to keep me happy.

Anyway, as stated before, I don't keep the fluid in there long enough to matter anyway. In fact, it's time to change it, and I'll take $9.88 per gallon for Advance brand vs $14.88 for Valvoline any day. Especially when I need 2 gallons. My 4000 stalled, 79k mile, daily driven transmission seems to like it just fine...

Yeah, but you have to make sure that the operator of the flush machine knows how to use it. If they hook the hoses up backwards, you get any clutch linings or metal shavings forced backwards into the seals.

Have you seen the average employee at a quick-lube establishment lately? 'Nuff said.

No thanks, I'd rather just change it often. It all got changed back in February anyway when I did the converter.

I actually read the user's manual. It said dexron III with mercon so I wouldn't use anything else. I bought some Coastal fluid for the converter swap I'm doing soon. These manufacturers have to meet the same SAE requirements so I don't see why it would matter as long as my trans temps stay low with it.

You may be right about a quick lube place with $9.00 an hour kids. I was not referring to a quick lube place though. A profesional shop is what I had in mind. We do about 5 a week.

Redline synthetic Racing ATF (=Type F style) in my Hughes-built 4L80E.

I also ran their Hi-Temp synthetic ATF in my built 4L60 for 6 years without any problem. Additional external filter and large cooler.

I use Dex3 from Advanced Auto.

All this oil has to meet specifications, so It has to do the job it's intended for. I don't think one brand is going to be that much different than another unless your talking synthetics. I just don't think its worth the money to buy a Valvoline over a auto parts house brand.

Motor oil is a little different I think. It comes from different base stocks so the oil that is refined better is going to be different than like a Group 1 oil.

you know what's funny... I used the Advanced cheapo brand in my 700R4 after I changed the converter in my old Camaro. It wasn't enough to fill it up; so there I was i the middle of the night, happy that I got it put al back together and could drive it again; anxious to get it out, so what did I do? I re-used the old fluid that was still sitting in the drain pan over to side that had been sitting there for about three weeks; I think it had a few grass particles in there as well... After I used that and filled it up, I put a shift kit in it about a few months later and drove the living hell outta that car for the next year. I never had a problem with it. I even manually shifted it, downshifting included, very very often. Nice explanation on the synthetic. I have always heard that, too.

As long as you get the Dexron/Mercon III, why would you waste money on RP or Amsoil? People get brainwashed into thinking more $$$ = Better product.
Not necessarily so. Store brand is fine, just change it often according to how much abuse it takes. Spend $5.00 a quart if it makes you feel better.

I have a Coan built 4L60E/Vig 3600 vert and am pushing 507 RWHP N/A,
Yet I use Autozone Coastal brand ATF. Why throw money away?

No synthetic in the trans, only in the LS1 427 stroker. Mobile one in that.
