Default Rebuilt the tranny, now have no 2-4.

Well here's the deal. I made a thread thinking the problem could be in the valve body but that has pretty much been isolated so here is a new thread.

Me and a friend rebuilt my 700r4 a week ago after finding a lot of clutch material in the filter and DIRTY fluid. 3rd gear clutches were pretty messed up in it.

So we get done rebuilding it with a heavy duty kit, red clutches/kolene steels, red band. Put it in the car and as I'm driving off I was excited because it was working good.

Drove around real easy on it for 100 miles and all was going good, firm shifts, no slipping, etc. Well the first time I went over 1/4 throttle on it and took 2nd up to speed a little bit I noticed a little slip. I just eased the throttle on the car up to about 70mph on the highway to check out 4th and, it would not go in to 4th. I tried speeding up and rolling off of the throttle hoping it would shift and nothing. Sped up and let off completely and no 4th.

Fast foward a couple days of messing with the valvebody thinking i was having some cross leaks and etc. Bought a new seperator plate, replugged it, ground it flat, 2nd accumulator spring was broke so I replaced that and the TransGo reprogramming kit looked good.

Well driving it to the shop the other night so the car would be cold when i was working on it the next morning seemed to be a chore. At any more than just above idle 2nd would slip like it's in neutral. I could shift straight from 1st-third by taking 1st up to high rpms and letting out of it.

So there's the problem. 1st and 3rd work like a charm, 2nd seems to be there but can only be idled. Not sure if I just couldn't feel it going in to 4th or if it was the same slipping as 2nd acts.

My thoughts were the band may have busted or knocked off, but I dont know why it would go gradually like that. Another thought was it may not have been applied all the way (possible servo failure, band warping, etc) and just ground down a lot because my fluid was pretty dirty.

The weird thing is me and a friend (he's done a couple trannies) did low/reverse drum and that works just fine. A tranny guy was there watching us do the rest of the clutches, put the drum in, put the band in, and put the servo in. And with his supervision, it doesn't work

I'm about getting sick of it. I feel like just taking it to a shop and saying ''deal with it.'' My shop teacher is getting pretty mad about my car being on the lift all the time.. and it's not like I'm not. Do you guys have any idea what I should be looking at?

I would concur since no 2nd or fourth there is a band problem internally , But really the only way to find out is to pull it and look , pin eye could have ripped through seen that alot over years with stock band and very agresive shift kits ,

That was my thinking, but why would it still engage a little bit? It will hold 2nd if it's just above idle but that's IT. If it's just the band I will be relieved because I could get that done in a couple hours tonight. The shift kit is set to be pretty agressive but this is also a new/aftermarket band. I guess I'll see what tonight tells me.

well if the clutch material burned or came off the band the metal part will still try to apply a little

Well tranny is sittin on the ground, I'll tear in to it tomorrow. I'm really hoping my only problem is the band, because if thats the case I can have that done and put back in in about 2 hours tomorrow. I hope this ends my tranny problems.. really getting pretty sick of them.

Well... found the problem. The band is suppost to be red right... well its halfway black. The thing is burned to ****!!

Looked at the clutches and they all look good. This is definatly the problem.

Now.. the solution. Well we're not sure if its a servo or a spacing issue. Couple scenarios came to mind.

1) servo was engaging TOO much and it was just burning off
2) servo wasn't engaging enough and it was just allowing it to slip on will
3) cross leak in the valvebody somewhere maybe deciding to engage the band at random times

1-2 seem pretty definite, the 3rd is just a theory that it could be. Not real worried, my friend has a high performance band with about 200 miles on it he is going to let me have.
