Default Can you identify the model year of this 4L80?

I know the picture quality isn't that great but I'm hoping you can still tell approx what year vehicle this came out of. I thought it was a '99, but the trans builder says it's older.
Builder says it will bolt up, but he doesn't know about the electrical side of it. Anyone?

I'm trying to figure out if this is actually a trans that I can use before I have the builder tear into it and see if it's going to be rebuildable.

TIA
Craig

The little yellow tag by the rear cooler line should have the year on it. An example would be....00=2000.

LOL 80's are great for business. Finding cores is another story. I love when I get a call about these and the customer makes a reference to a 1000 rwhp twin turbo blue pickup truck. I have a couple orders with crazy rwhp #'s. One is a for a 1200 rwhp car and the other is supposed to be in the 1600 range for a f-body. I guess we will see how strong these transmissions are. All I can say is 300m billet is your friend. How's the car running? Vince

Thanks for the info guys.

Other than the newer models being stronger, is there much difference as far as an f-body swap would go? Are the electronics different? Would I be able to control the older style w/ the stock PCM (modified by HPT)?

I've got myself a little confused here.

The cooler lines are front to back (newer style), but the bell housing does not have a bolt hole at the 12:00 position.
Does this mean I have a 97-98? Anything special that needs to be done to make it work? Will the stock pcm work?

The pcm will have to be re flashed with a truck program for the 4l80e. You will also have to get a harness adaptor to convert the 60 to 80 plug. Also another harness for one of the two added speed sensors. As far as the trans is concerned you will be only using 5 out of the 6 bolts holes with that bell housing. There is a an ls1 inspection cover with bolt holes for the oil pan. Although I do not know if it works with the mid year case (97-98)and also the fbody oil pan. Hope this helps. Vince

Thanks Vince,
I can have HPT reflash my CM. I was already planning on buying the speartech wiring harness. Hopefully the dust cover will fit.

Any advice as far as the build? I was going to use red clutches, vacuum mod, and a yank verter.
Someone told me to use either an OEM 2nd gear clutch, or use a cushion plate. Sound like good advice?

I think when set up properly the factory clutches work just fine. I do normally tighten up the clutch clearances more than what most books say. Good luck with your build.

In case anyone stumbles across this trying to identify a trans, here is what I've figured out (thanks to cablebandit)

It has the cooler lines oriented front/back indicating 99+, but does not have the bell housing bolt at 12:00. That is because it came out of a diesel. It is, as far as I can tell a 99 as I originally thought.

Craig,

Why ya so worried about using the PCM to shift it??
Why not just build it as a manual Valve body and shift it yourself???
You going to use a Transbrake with it???

PM me who's building it for you local?? $$ too.

I just want to keep the auto shifts, and I'm trying to keep costs down.
I think I'll add a rossler t-brake later on, trying to do this as cheap as possible for now. Saving the money for the summer mods I've got planned.

sent ya a pm
