Default transmission filter problem

I'm doing a trans service right now. The o-ring gasket thing will not come out. It is stuck in there and I had to cut it up to get most of it out. Now the very top part of it, which is rubber, is stuck on the other side of the edge. Basically the damn thing wont come out and the new one will not go in properly. When I try to press it there while it's on the filter, it doesn't go in at all so the filter falls out. I don't know what to do and I'm really pissed off. Has anyone had this problem???

Yes, you need to use a screw driver on the lip of the old seal to collapse it and remove it.
Then you need to install the new seal with something like a wood/metal dowel or socket the same size as the seal and tap it in. Then install the filter last.

Ok, well the last seal was all rubber. The new one is part rubber and has a hard shell around it. I finally scraped all of the rubber that was stuck. I must of not put ATF on it last time I did a service, cause it's seized on there. So I'll hit it in with a socket, hopefully it won't break.

Should have just left the old one in there.

:Sigh: Hahaha this is so great. I tried hitting the new one in there and now it's all bent up cause the old one is STILL IN THERE. Now I have to buy a whole new filter cause I doubt I can get the seal only.

Now I need to get some 90* tool to pull it out.

I'm about out of ideas on how to get this metal part of the steal out. At the top of the seal, there is a lip that I can pry on. I'm not sure if that lip is metal from the trans, or from the seal. I've been pulling on it but I don't want to break it and find out it metal off the trans.

I would suggest going to a trans shop. I'm sure they have a few extra seals laying around.

I'm going to have to continue this tomorrow, but here is how I left it: The old metal casing around the seal is still in the transmission. I need to find out some way to get it out.

I left the old O ring in it and didn't use the new one.

A skinny little flathead screwdriver with a sharp
tip should be able to weasel in under the ring and
crush it in to the center. then needlenose pliers
or a hook to pull it out. Try not to scratch the bore
too badly. Just pick at it easy until you catch.

I went to homedepot and bought a set of sharp pointed tools. I hammered it in between and finally collapsed the seal. Sorta of made an indent down the wall though.. So it's off now and I'm now having a trouble with the new one. I used the back side of a socket and tried hammering it in. It doesn't want to budge. How much force should I be giving it?

Last time I did the service it was a breeze, especially with a lift. I'm keeping the seal in next time.

Ok, I'm done whining now. It's finally in. Thanks everyone for helping me out. I didn't think a simple fluid change could ruin two days.
