No Reverse,Late shift in second
Trying to help a friend out with a few question's. On the way home from dinner he got on it and hit the revlimiter in second.Since then it will not shift into second until higher up in the rpm range and then it just rev;s. The other gear's are fine, then today went out to put the car in reverse and there is no reverse. This is in a 98 corvette with a 2800 stall.Any help will do!!

He has toasted his tranny. Band burned up, servo leaking, burnt reverse clutches etc... Get a scanner on it to verify no electrical faults, check the fluid condition and take it to a pro! Not much else he can do in this case I'm afraid.

The no reverse sounds more like he may have stripped the sun shell or a combination of the two .

This car is pretty much babied--Never had any issues at all-slipping etc.
Thanks for the Post Chris!

The sunshell is used in second a reverse but it diferent ways, When the center strips you lose reverse and second, Its and internal part of the trans.

no dipstick on the c5.
you have to warm the car up to full operating temps.
have it in the air,
there is a drain/fill plug on the drivers side of the trans pan.
once warmed up crack open the drain plug.
if a fluid comes out, your ok.
if nothing comes out time to fill until it does, then install the plug.
been there, done that (about a 1000times...lol < ex c5 owner)
btw. its about 2in from the hot azz exh pipe..be careful...LOL

about 1.200.00 to repair--Locally!--What do you think?

$1,200.00 sounds cheap. Especially if it includes the R&R. But, if he is looking for astock rebuild, or gonna get it done from a small one man shop with no overhead... sounds good. Hard to tell.
Does that include a converter replacement or freshen up?

He didnt say what he was puting in in detail--he did say the "sun shell" would be a "heavy duty" part--so i'm not real sure!
Thanks for the help though, If I find out next week when it goes in I will let you know.

Sounds like he is using a "Beast" sunshell. Or at least an upgraded part. Good.
I guess my concern is that your friend will be back in the same boat in a relatively short time. $1,200.00 is a bunch of money right? If it were me I would want to do my best to make sure it does not fail in a short period of time by utilizing the latest in upgrades. I would bet your friend is going to lean on it a bit when he gets it back. I know I would! LOL
