I had the same one but my converter was a 3000. Never had any problems with the trans heating up

Get an old a/c condensor, clean it out and bolt it in.

Lots of area for cooling.

You can even use a pusher fan.

No modifying. The only thing you need to do is buy the fittings because they don't come with it. They are a 1/2 in. NPT.

I also run a B&M 24k (copy cat, I guess). When you connect it, remove the radiator from the loop. That is, go straight from the transmission to the cooler, back to the transmission. When an external cooler is used, the radiator actually acts as a heater, versus a cooler.
I have a transmission temperature gauge, and it is almost always well below 200 degrees.

That's interesting, because their instructions say to hook into the return line back to the tranny. It's supposed to use the original cooler in addition to the new secondary cooler. I just installed a B&M 24k on Saturday and did it per their instructions.

i believe they tell you to put the sending line into the factory cooler, return line out of the radiator into the B&M, and then out of the cooler back to the trans.

you can use it either way, i use to have it hooked up through the radiator, and now i have it straight to the cooler. I would say as far as cooling goes, there are arguements for both, but the temp range really shouldnt make a huge difference from either way according to what ive read on this forum from a few people who have temp gauges. but check this out, i guess i had a small leak in the radiator, and water got into the trans fluid, and caused slipping and other problems, so i might have to say it may be a little better and easier (install & $$ wise) to just run it straight to the trans cooler. its easier to run it that way, and if you ever get a leak in the radiator, you wont have to worry about water mixing with your tran fluid and ruining your clutches and such.
