Default trans temp ?

I just put a built 4L60E trans with a 4400 stall in my car last week. How hot is the trans temp supposed to get? mine just cruising is around 180-185. the hottest it has ran is about 195. is this normal? I always thought trans temp was supposed to be a lil higher.

That sounds fine actually pretty good with a stall that size.

how big is the cooler im lookin into gettin one for my thirdgen. the guy who built my converter said that he likes to see the temp around 160. he told me to put a big cooler on and bypass the stock radiator cooler. there is no point in running the tranny fluid through the radiator that is around 185-190 degrees. if you have a big enough cooler you wont need the stock one.

I second that you should bypass the stock cooler in the radiator. I have a Coan 4000 stall Nitrous converter and my trans temps have never been over 175 and it was over 95 degrees in the middle of the day to get that hot. I rarely see over 150 with my setup.
Get the biggest cooler you can stuff in the car.

I also have a Hayden cooler and a brand new built tranny....Which model do you use? For the guys already running external coolers only (bypass stock cooler), are you running them with or without a fan? I'm seriously considering bypassing the stock cooler when the new tranny goes up....I have a Hayden 1403 cooler (12 1/2 x 7 1/2 x 3/4 inch) is this too small? thanks guys

my hayden cooler is 3/4"thick, 7.5" tall, 15.5" long, 12"core. I put it right in front of my radiator(no longer have ac condensor), and it bypasses the stock cooler. Today i had it on the expressway for about 20 miles and it was only running at about 145-150 degrees

Where are you guys getting the temp reading from ? Where does the sensor for the gauge mount ?

I know some run a pan sensor and others run a sensor on the trans cooler line on the out side near the trans .

This would make a diffrence in temp readings. The temps in the trans cooler lines would be hotter being that the fluid just came out of the trans , the pan reading would be a little cooler due to the pan and extra fluid dissipating some heat.

Just a thought ?

ive always welded a bung into the trans pan, and put the sensor there. my trans in my 72 camaro runs about 170-180 on a normal day with a 3800 stall.
