Code P1870 is the code set for excesive converter slip . Generally its caused by one of the following. 1- restricted PWM solenoid screen, 2-worn converter lockup clutch, 3- worn Converter regulator valve bore in valve body , And with that number of miles its likley all of the above I am afraid .

Well actually short of rebuilding the trans or replacing it (best ideas)
You would need to replce the converter, PWM solenoid and possibly the valve body .

Would a 4L80e be a perfect swap or is there modifications needed?

This seems like the perfect thread to praise the gang at Performabuilt!!. I bought a converter from them(for wifes' B4C Camaro) and have had nothing but good solid runs with it!! I build it she drives it(well if i'm good I get to go gas it up sometimes). They are straight shooters who do an outstanding job, when the trans dies, I'm getting one from them!!. $.025

Thanks 87gnx , And for golf cart no a 4l80e would not be a direct swap and yes if your dealing with the sock trans and want to try that before upgrading get a reman converter and then those solenoids from GM
