trnsmission shops frown at T.C and shift kit install
i went to two tranny shops around where i live to ask questions and to see how much it would cost to have a shift kit installed and TC. To my surprise both shops did not recomend the torqe converter, and i got two different answers on the shift kit, one for it the other not for it.I was really looking into doing something for more performance into my transmission, now i have more questions and doubts about if i should do any mods to my tranny. Any one have any thoughts.
Run, do not walk, to another tranny shop. Post in the West Coast section and ask for suggestions on places near you.
A converter is a great mod for an A4 so definitely do it. IMO, a shift kit is nice to have, but not a must have. It should be installed by someone who knows what they are doing or someone willing to take their time and do it right.

There is nothing wrong with installing a higher stall converter. Most A4 guys end up doing it a some point. It is
a great bang-for-the-buck mod. I think a shift kit is a good idea personally. It will take some sloppiness away.
For me, I went with TransGo. I like to manually shift sometimes and their HD-2 kit allows you to up shift and down
shift and hold each gear to any RPM. It's the best of both worlds to me.
One thing I would recommend is getting a tranny cooler. The temperature will rise with a higher stall. Getting one is
cheap anyways - and some added protection.
Just my 2 cents.

T/C=good, cooler=good, shift kit=good. Thats all you need to know. Find a good shop to install it with some type of warranty and your all set.
Yeah, what is said above. Most shops just do everyday minivan overhauls and replacements and are really clueless on performance mods and don't want to be responsible for possible problems that could arise. Find a "performance" shop and enjoy your .4 quicker car.
torque converter is a must and most shops should be able to do it in about 3-4 hours. however transgo shift kits are good if installed right. the reason shops won't do them is because they are a pain in the ***, take up to 8 hours to complete, and the possibility that they will mess up and you'll have a tranny that doesn't shift into 3rd or 4th about a month from then is pretty good.

I installed the Transgo shift kit in my truck over a year ago. No problems yet. Just great performance and lower temps when towing. The instructions and video were great! Took me a weekend to install.
