Ok guys, my trans has been leaking for some time now and I'm not sure where its coming from or where specifically to look because it seems like its just covered in it.
Any ideas where it might be leaking? most common spots ? I have it stored for the winter now so I'm going to try to clean all the trans fluid up off of it and see if I can find the leak, but it would be nice to have an idea where to check.

its an A4, I'm hoping to pull it and drop in a T56 by the end of the winter, but I'd like to at least stop the leak for now until I can get the parts together for the swap....
ya,i hate looking under the car and see drops of tranny oil on the floor.haha, that's funny,i'm looking to do a T56 swap in the summer myself. i have all winter to look for a decent shape T56 to rebuild.
If a transmission is covered in fluid and it is not readily apparent where the fluid is coming from the 1st thing to do is to clean it with some aerosol brake cleaner. Then dry it wih compressed air or let it air dry.
After it is dry then run it. The look for any signs of leakage. There are only a few places it can leak.
The front pump / converter area.
The servo cover.
The electrical connesctor.
The dipstick tube.
The pan.
The extension housing, speed sensor.
The shift shaft sel.
And of course the vent tube. If it is wet up on top or high on the unit then it is possible that it is either overfilled or is getting too hot.
Hope that helps.

I would not hazard a guess. The reason is individually they can be a bit expensive. And if it were leaking out many of the seals we would recommend that the unit comes out for a complete reseal job. Think about it this way.. if the external seals have failed, what is going on with the internal seals?
