Default What size tranny cooler?

Ill be running a 200R-4 and I havent quite decide on the converter yet, but I know its going to be in the 3500 to 3800 range with around 2.5 str. I have an M6 now, so I dont have the radiator with a stock tranny built into it, so would it need to go bigger since I dont currently have one. How do you determine what size cooler you need? Thanks

I'd look at the 24,000 GVW supercooler.

If you are not running a 160 T-stat so that your fans run frequently, you might also consider a cooler with a fan built-in. That gives some additional mounting flexability since you do not need to rely upon the factory fans.

To Farmtruc: What size are you running on that B&M unit? To Ragtop99: Im running a 160º stat, then I think that the fans were set to come on a little earlier through my tuning. Is the 24k the biggest one that B&M sells? Is anything bigger than that necessary for what Im looking to do with it? Does B&M make one with a fan built into it? Will it be needed with what I mentioned to you above? Thanks

I don't know if B&M makes a bigger cooler, you can find their website and check them out. Just stay with a plate type cooler.

The 24k will probably be adequate. some members use only that cooler w/o the radiator. My only concern would be if you were also using an induction like FTRA or SSRA which partially blocks the radiator.

I am running the FTRA, is that going to cause me problems for the tranny cooler? Is there any way to modify any of it so that the tranny cooler and radiator both get adequate air supply? I sure would hate to throw $170 down the drain for the ram air kit so that I can be sure of getting enough air for the cooler. Im sure that lots of people are doing it, but how? Thanks

I have a B&M 28000 GVW trans cooler on my car. It just barely fits, and it was kind of a bitch getting it installed because it is too tall. I'd recommend the B&M 24000 that was mentioned above. It's basically the same trans cooler I'm pretty sure only its 6 inches tall instead of 8. Jegs has the best prices I found for trans coolers. 50 bucks for the 24k and 60 for the 28k
The install for the 24K cooler would probably be a pretty quick job.

Are the B&M 24k cooler universal? Do they have specific ones for f-bodies, Camaros, trannys, etc.? The bigger the GVW, the bigger in size it will be? Thanks

I most recently had a B&M 24K trans cooler, & B&M 3Qt. deeper aluminum pan installed on my stock 2001 Z28 A4. I also had a cyburdine digital transmission guage installed with the sending unit going into the drivers side of the transmission. At freeway speeds, my transmission temperature is anywhere from 145F to 152F. City driving my temperatures are a bit higher anywhere from 160F to 168F. I live in a very warm climate, and my guages are calibrated to + or - 1 degree.

If you use my numbers as a reference, you can plainly see the advantages of a cooler coupled with increased fluid capacity.

How much of a difference is it going to make going from a 24k to a 28k? If the 28k are a pain to install and doesnt do any more than the 24k, then Ill just get the 24k. But if its worth the extra $10 and install, then I have no problem getting the bigger one. Thanks

To Horist and Jorday...Jorday, you said that you had a hard time installing the 28k, what gave you problems, did you have to modify anything, where did you mount it, and lastly since it is so big, does it cause any clearance problems? Horist...you seem to be running the same one as Jorday, please answer the questions that I had for him. Thanks everyone for all your help, its much appreciated. (Please list the part number for the 28k GVW.)

When does it become a necessity for a cooler with a built in fan? As mentioned before, I will probably end up with a 3800 stall speed. Im running the 160º stat, the fans were programmed through my tuning to come on sooner, however I am running the Fast Toys ram air kit. I hear that causes some cooling issues, I havent noticed any, but then again, the factory guage doesnt tell you the exact reading or at least I dont think so. I have the stat in and the reading is still just under 210, it never changes. Will the kit cause problems for the cooler? I sure would hate to take out the kit because then that would mean that I just blew $170 for nothing. Im sure that lots of people are running the kit in an auto, so what did they do to avoid problems? Should I get a built in fan? Im already probably gonna go with the 28k GVW, but if not, then Im definately getting the 24k. Thanks

I just bought a Madman racing complete TH400 kit that comes with the 28k GVW cooler. I bought a Spal fan for maximum cooling duties. I may mount the fan/cooler in the back of the car to get it away from that enclosed front end, and hot radiator. I am considering removing the front grill insert and putting in a stainless still mesh front, and painting it. Its what some of the turbo cars are doing to allow more air over thier intercoolers. I may mount the cooler in front of the radiator there, if I go ahead and ditch the front stock piece.

I personally want to run the 28k GVW cooler, but I dont want to run into any problems with mounting it. The reason why I chose that one is because that was the biggest one that Jeg's and Summit sells. If I were to go with a different one then it would be the 24k GVW. The other main concern that I have is the Fast Toys ram air kit that Im running. I dont want that to affect the way the cooler cools, but I want to be able to mount the cooler in a location that gets adequate air so that it keeps the tranny cool. Im going to need it because I will be running a 3800 stall speed on my converter. Thanks guys for all your help and let me know what you think.

Whats the purpose of the fan switch? I have the fans to kick on a lot sooner than they would the Hypertech and that was done through my tuning.

Do you think since that I have the FTRA and could cause cooling problems, I should buy a cooler with a built in fan? Will the fan provide plenty of air so that the cooler does its job? How does air from a built in fan compare to air that comes from the front of the car? Thanks
