Default Loud thump when shifing into drive

When the car is cold and I shift my car into drive, it makes a loud thump, and the entire car shakes. It's only bad when putting it into drive. It shifts fine otherwise. Any suggestions?

If it's the tranny mount, what should I go ahead and replace it with? A poly? or another rubber one? I've heard of several people complaining about the vibration running a poly mount causes.

I don't recommend arbitrarily replacing parts because they might be bad. Take a good look at that mount before you spend the money for one... sure it's an inexpensive part. But I would be a rich man if I had all the money all my customers ever spent because they "thought" something was wrong! No kidding, see it almost every day.

You owe it to yourself to learn what a good mount vs. failed mount looks like. Besides.... we need to concentrate on the problem....

You say it only does it going into Drive right? Not Reverse or Park? And it shifts out ok, no other symptoms otherwise. You need to inspect the Torqu Arm mounts as well.

Is you SES light on?

Go Cowboys!

I have an SES light on for several reasons. MAF, O2's, Knock sensor. I just purchased the car a few days ago knowing about the problems. I've already got the MAF and O2's in the mail as of tomorrow.

I went ahead and ordered these today. The car has 104k on it.
1 x Prothane Trans Mount, Black (Camaro & Firebird) 7-1604BL
1 x MSD 8.5mm Super Conductor Spark Plug Wires, Red (1998-2002 Camar
1 x Energy Suspension Torque Arm Mount Bushings, Red (1993-2002 Cama
1 x Energy Suspension Sway Bar Endlink Set, 20mm, Rear, Red
1 x Energy Suspension Sway Bar Endlink Set, 28mm, Front, Red

Ok thanks for getting back to me. The reason I asked that specific question was because your PCM is most likely commanding a high line pressure based on engine conditions!

Especially the MAF... don't go hammering on this tranny so to speak until you know it is in proper working condition. Serious damage to the tranny could occur.

Get that stuff on the car and let's see how it does.

Feel free to call me at the shop if you like.

Thanks for responding, if I have any questions/comments I'll be sure to let you know. I'll also give you an update when I get all the parts in.

Well, today I got under the car and pulled some things apart. I installed the new torque arm bushing, the other one was absolutely shot. The tranny mount however, was fine. It was already an Energy Suspension mount. I just put the new MAF in as well, I don't know if it cleared the code but the tranny is still shifting hard into drive.

Did you reset the PCM memory?

If not you need to do so by disconnecting the battery for at least 3 minutes. Then run it again to see if the symptom persists.

When you say it "shifts hard into drive", how does it upshift into the other gears?

What is you engine idle rpm?

It shifts fine into other gears. Firm and quick. It's just when putting it into drive it causes the entire car to jolt.

I'm going to reset the PCM now. Brb.

Battery is disconnected now. I started it up before I disconnected it, and it was idling around 900ish.

Ok, it was reset. Tranny still shifting hard into drive, and the car is idling at about 900.

All it did was reset my trip meter. lol.

Went up to autozone and had the car scanned. I've got the following codes:
P0102 - MAF
P0452 - Fuel Tank pressure sensor
P0135 - 02 Sensors (both banks sensor 1, I have new ones in the other room)
P0332 - Knock sensor.

I replaced my MAF with one off of an 02 z28 with lower miles. Still getting the code though.

Well sorry to be the guy to say it, but you gotta get that engine running righ before you can pass judgement on the tranny. The line pressure is elevated because of the MAF code right now, that is why you feel the harsh engagement into Drive.

I'm not sure those MAF's are compatible... are you?

Ok, good chance the fuse is burned because of O2 sensor wires being on the exhaust then. Check that out closely.

I looked at the 02 wires today, didn't look like they were making contact with the headers. Either way, I have new 02's that are waiting to be put in. Also, the fuse hasn't blown yet and I drove it around. The tranny seemed to shift into drive much softer. I'll update you tomorrow.

Hey that's good news huh?

Any codes now?

At the very least you are on the right track. That harsh engagement you experienced is a very good example of how much range of authority the PCM has on these 4L60E's. For performance applications I do not believe in using the factory Pressure Control Solenoid at all.

Good Luck and good job to you for sticking with it.
