Default No second gear

Well I believe it is time to begin looking for a new tranny, second gear I believe is completely gone. My car shifts straight from first to third and vice versa when cruising. My question is does it pay to get the thing rebuilt or should I look for a new one? I was looking at FLT and they seem to have some really good prices. I have also seen many good comments about that company. Kinda short on money right now so it may be a few months but I am hoping to have it done before the Power Tour this June. So what is everyones advice?

Based on your comments I would suggest that your unit has an issue with the band or band servo. Either way it is semantics... the problem is internal. Is your SES lamp on?

Vince at FLT does build a very nice unit. But, I would be happy to discuss some options you may not be aware of with you!

Good Luck either way.

Yes my SES light is on in the car, it has been on for a while because I have race headers and an ORY so I don't have all O2 sensors. I took the car in to get checked at a local transmission shop before the snow fell here, they checked the tranny for problems and said that it was not throwing any codes. They then told me they could tear it apart for ~$300 and tell me what the problem was. I don't really want to take it there again because since then I have heard many horror stories about their work.

I understand. The reason I was looking for codes was to try and determine if the condition is something that might be relatively minor so to speak... it's a long shot at best.

And I would be skeptical of any Transmission shop that needs to tear down any unit in order to be able to have a discussion about the build. Bottom line is, it is hurt and needs to be reconditioned... they have a very good idea of what needs to happen, make no mistake about it. They know enough about what is going on to give you several options prior to removing it from the car and holding you captive. It is a very old Marketing ploy that gives all of us shop owners a bad name and reputation. I believe in helping people... not screwing people. That sort of tactic is just not necessary.

Your instincts served you well here.

I had the exact hting happen to me this last week. it will slip into second if you are very easy on it in first then you let off the throttle and directly into third. and if I am taking off normally I have to let off of it in first to get it to shift and then it goes directly to third. The funny thing is that no other gear is slipping not even 4th, not a bit. We are tearing mine down this weekend and goignt to go ahead and build. good luck with it!! hopefully it is something miniscule (spelling??)

The importance of having 4th gear is that tells us that the band itself has not failed. So, there is a good chance that you have either a solenoid failure (not likely) or a servo failure, there could also be a problem in the valve body itself.

Hope that helps.

So I am guessing with the modifications I have right now it would probably be just as good and cheaper to find that out and do a rebuild huh. I am kinda new to the whole transmission thing so I apologize for what may be some stupid questions. I want to get this fixed and fixed right so it is ready for the Power Tour and as I said am kinda short on cash right now so getting a new one and then installing it may be a push in that time.
