Default 4:10's in an A4 with a Hi-Stall

Im putting in my TCI3500 in 2 weeks. I have been thinking about getting 4.10's. I know it will run really good with the 3.23 gear. I dont do much highway driving. Will the 4.10's get me a few 10ths and tighten up the converter alttle or will it be overkill. I want my 40-50 punch like my 70 punch is now(preconverter) I plan on running nittos. Thanks Tony

4.10s are pretty hardcore and you might have trouble hooking up if all you plan on running is the nittos. i have 4.10s and a bigger stall than you but i love it! i also know that i only want to run slicks and it doesnt see the highway much at all. i believe if you are running a radial, there is not much to gain with 4.10 over 3.73. maybe a .1th, maybe not.

it does hammer like a thunderbolt from a roll though!!!

3.73s will get you a good 40 - 50 punch. They are a little more versatile than 4.10s. with 4.10s though you can use second start when traction limited if you have it.

If you go 4.10s, go all the way and get more stall too.

Tony... I have 3.70's (comparable to 3.73's) in my car with that same convertor, as you know. At 70 MPH, I'm turning right at 2500 RPM in 4th. I wouldn't want the RPM's any higher, particularly on a long highway trip. With the 4.10's, I think you'd be pushing 2800 RPM or so, just keeping up with traffic. Factor in the gear whine that you'll also have to deal with (most likely, anyway) and you MIGHT end up kicking yourself down the road for getting such short gears.

If you want a good, cheap combo, I'll sell you my 3.42 gears for $50... 25,000 miles on them and they're not worn at all. With those and the TCI 3500, your car should be pretty good from a roll, and since they're GM factory gears, you shouldn't get any gear whine out of them. Just thought I'd offer.

I don`t mean to but in, but what if he went with a taller tire? Say a 27" or 28"? I`ve been thinking about 4.10`s and a 27" tire myself. But I`ll be running a TCI4400.

I just installed 4.10s with my Vigilante 3200 a few days ago but have yet to drive it since the tranny is gone . If you want a taller tire the 4.10s will work well with a 15x8 wheel and a 26x10 rage slick. Im running 15x8 draglites with 26x10x15 ET Drag since the tire will swell to 27.3" on a 8" rim around 118 MPH. I'll have some results in after the tranny is rebuilt.

The selection of available taller STREET tires is pretty slim. Nittos work pretty well so you may not want to give them up.

For track use, taller tires make sense if you have the power to require the extra traction.

ummm...there are plenty of tall street tires. take a look at the 275/60/15 DRs from both nitto and BFG. they are 28.0" tall.

also i am running the 27.3" et drag and 4.10 gear with fat stall. i love the gear!

I have had this combo for a while...

4.10 + A4 = ~3000 at 80mph. Very doable.

I'm not sure I would like 4.10's and stock shift points, my setup shifted at 6600.
